Glossary Function of Behavior- reason a person engages in a target behavior Attention function- to gain some form of social attention or a reaction from other people; this can be positive or negative attention Tangible function- to obtain a tangible item or gain access to a desired activity Escape function- to get away from something or avoid something altogether Automatic function- to give the person some form of internal sensation that is pleasing or to remove an internal sensation that is displeasing (e. g. pain)
What is a function of behavior? Is a reason a person engages in a target behavior. Behavior that relies on a function has previously been reinforced, and is part of of the person’s learning history. Behaviors get strengthened by either getting something, or getting out of something. Identifies ”why” behavior is occurring.
Different Functions of Behavior Tangible Escape (socially mediated negative ) Attention -positive and negative (socially mediated) Automatic -positive and negative
Attention Behavior that occurs due to attention. This can be either positive (e. g. great job!) or negative attention (e. g. reprimands). It is a socially mediated positive behavior because it is occurring to gain a social interaction. A child may not have the repertoire to seek out attention in a desired way, which can sometimes result in negative attention being reinforced. Attention can be reinforcing regardless of how it is received. Reinforcemnt in the form of a praise can equivalent to a reprimand, in that it is still a form of attention. Always involves another person that is present Ex: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=0 T 2 R 8 p. Tpcoo kid https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=2 GW 3 I 7 m 38 io role play
Behavior is occurring to gain something. This can be anything that can be given or taken away. Ex: A child may cry until an i. Pad is given. This in turn will produce the child to cry more often in the future when they want the i. Pad. They have learned, if I cry, they will give me the i. Pad. Automatic Behavior is not reliant on the actions of others to produce an outcome, this is an internal feeling and can happen if another person is there or not. Automatic Positive Other functions must be ruled out Behavior is happening even when individual is alone EX: thumb sucking may be reinforced by stimulation of hand or mouth Automatic negative Behaviors that directly terminate aversive stimulation. This can either be harmful or helpful Ex: a person’s head hurts so they began to bang their head to try and relieve the pain Ex: a person has a rash so they put on cream to make it stop itching. Escape Social negative Behaviors are learned as a result of their effectiveness in terminating or postponing aversive events, settings, or people. The behavior that the child has engaged in has got them out of the situation, demand, or setting resulting in the behavior becoming escape maintained. Ex: Teacher tells child to complete math work, child begins to cuss, child gets sent out. -Child has learned as a result of this behavior they will get to leave the classroom and not complete the math work.
