God’s Word Spreads Acts 12: 24, 25 (NASB) But the word of the Lord continued to grow and to be multiplied. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, taking along with them John, who was also called Mark. § The terms for grow and multiplied are also found in Acts 6: 7. Acts 19: 20 reiterates growth § Persecution causes the growth of the church § In the next verse the scene will shift back to Antioch Gospel of Grace Fellowship ggf. church 2
The Church in Antioch Acts 13: 1, 2 (NASB) Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. ” § There are echoes of Jesus and the early disciples: prayer, the Spirit, commissioning Gospel of Grace Fellowship ggf. church 3
Preachers Commissioned and Sent Acts 13: 3, 4 (NASB) Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. The Word of God Is Preached Acts 13: 5, 6 (NASB) When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, § Jesus began His ministry in synagogues (Luke 4: 15) § Jesus preached the Word (Luke 4: 17 -20) § Jesus was opposed (Luke 4: 28, 19) Gospel of Grace Fellowship ggf. church 5
The Word of God Is Opposed Acts 13: 7, 8 (NASB) who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. § “Opposing” is diastrepho_ (to pervert) and is used 5 times in Luke/Acts out of 7 in the NT § There often was occult opposition (Acts 8: 9 -11, 21; Acts 16: 16 -21; Acts 19: 13 -20) Gospel of Grace Fellowship ggf. church 6
