Persuasive Technology Persuasive technology is broadly defined as technology that is designed to change attitudes or behaviors of the users through persuasion and social influences, but not through coercion. Such technologies are regularly used in sale, diplomacy, politics, religion, military training, public health, and management, and may potentially be used in any area of human-human or human-computer interaction. Most self-identified persuasive technology research focuses on interactive, computational technologies, including desktop computers, Internet services, video games, and mobile devices, but this incorporates and builds on the results, theories, and methods of experimental psychology, rhetoric, and human-computer interaction. The design of persuasive technologies can be seen as a particular case of design with intent.
Example of persuasive technology is fitness or dieting plan app Myfitness. Pall
Myfitness. Pall My. Fitness. Pal is a calorie counting application that helps the user stay informed about food and food intake. The app has been downloaded between 10 -50 million times, and has over 995 thousand reviews, of which approximately 74% have rated the app a five out of five (see Appendix, “Quantitative analysis of recommended apps”) (Google Play, 2015). The app contains a huge nutrition and calorie database spanning over 5 million foods and is available for computer users and for mobile users.
What does it promotes? Generally, it promotes a healthy a lifestyle. For instance, a user get to set a goal either it could be weight loss, weight gain or even weight maintenance. A user to get set their own goals or the program can also set a personalised goal for the user according to the user's needs. This leads to a healthy lifestyle because it will eventually change user's eating habits as we keep track of the calories and walk towards the goal.
How does it affects users’ life? This app helps a user to keep track of the food / calorie intake and also the other nutrient facts that contains in the food by just scanning the barcode at the packaging. It has a positive effect on the user. Besides , this app has a feature which can import receipes which also promotes user to cook by themselves. Home cooked food is are numerous times better in taste and health wise than anything that is packed and sealed which contains preservatives. Moreover, it has also restaurant logging feature which enables to quickly log menu of the user's favourite restaurant, it keeps the user aware of the calories that the food offered by the restaurant.
How does it affects users’ life? Nevertheless, this app also provides a platform for a user to customise and upload his own receipe of food so the other users can download and savour it. A personal log has been also enabled for the user to keep track of their breakfast , lunch and dinner. This app also provides water tracking service for the user as the user log water in cups, ounces or ml, the program save the user's recently logged amounts. This app also has a feature to add friends, a single man's progress needs supportive friend sometimes, thus that is why this was enabled in the app. So they can achieve their goals and lead a healthy lifestyle by being supportive to each other.
