Musculoskeletal Research Center Best Paper Awards Submission Deadline: Friday, April 3 rd The Musculoskeletal Research Center invites all BWH Post- docs, Instructors and Assistant Professors working in basic or clinical research areas related to musculoskeletal disease to participate in the ‘Best Paper Awards in Musculoskeletal Research – 2014’ competition sponsored by the Center. A review committee will rate papers on quality, novelty, scientific and/or clinical impact and relevance to MSK disease with respect to mechanisms, diagnosis, or treatment. Fund to Sustain Research Excellence Upcoming Deadline: Monday, April 6 th The BWH BRI has developed a Bridge Research Grant Program designed to offer interim support to independent investigators who submitted a non-mentored NIH grant application that was reviewed but missed the funding payline. Recipients will be chosen based on need and merit. Individual awards of $50 K for one year will be available to qualified, eligible applicants. BRI/ORC Micro. Grants Application accepted on a rolling basis Post-docs, clinical fellows and junior faculty (ranking assistant professor or below) in the BWH research community are invited to apply. Applicants must apply in advance of the event requiring support and may not receive support for events that have already occurred.

New NIH Biographical Sketch Format NIH announced a new biosketch format and instructions, posted at SF 424 (R&R) Forms and Applications. The new format is required for due dates on or after January 25, 2015. The new format extends the page limit from four to five pages. It allows researchers to describe up to five of their most significant contributions to science, along with the historical background that framed their research. Investigators can outline the central findings of prior work and the influence of those findings. For more information, see the November 26, 2014, Guide notice.

Maximizing the Mentee-Mentor Relationship, June 2 -3, 2015 Applications due April 23 This new course will help emerging clinical and translational investigators navigate the complexities of the mentoring dynamic. Emphasizing the perspective of the mentee, this two-day course will explore the lifecycle of mentoring relationships through case studies, lectures, and interactive sessions. Each session will address critical issues such as expectations and responsibilities, pitfalls and challenges, communication, and career development. Participants will learn how to direct their own mentee-mentor relationships, as well as understand the impact these relationships can have on both personal and academic success. The course will consist of approximately 8 -10 largely case-based sessions (1 -1. 5 hrs each), with small-group and plenary discussions and a syllabus with readings and other resources.
