Background • 1994 -2006 o Average of 3 school shootings/year o 42 total school shootings • Post Virginia Tech (2007 -2012) o Average of 9 school shootings/year o 54 total school shootings
Recent Events • 2010 o 11 Shootings at Schools Ø TX: 1 (University of Texas) o 12 Fatalities Ø TX: 1 (University of Texas) • 2011 o 8 Shootings at Schools Ø TX: 2 (Worthing HS & Ross Elementary) o 9 Fatalities Ø TX: 1 (Worthing HS) • 2012 o o 8 Shootings at Schools 38 Fatalities
Survival Mindset • Personal Responsibility = Situational Awareness • Color = State of Mind/Mental Preparation Color Code System White = Unaware Yellow = Relaxed but alert Orange = Something appears wrong Red = Taking action/fight or flight Black = Panic, over reaction, under/no action
Three Step Response • If you are in the building with the shooter: o o o • If you are in a different building from the shooter: o o • Get out Hide out Take out Stay inside the building Wait for official notification to leave the building If you are outdoors apply the following to your situation: o o Determine where shots are coming from Take cover & call 817 -735 -2600 immediately Assess situation Determine escape route
Get Out • Exit the building (If possible) • Find a safe place to go • Call 817 -735 -2600 to report o Provide location of shooting o Provide description of shooter
Hide Out • When you can’t get out safely o Shooter is in close proximity o You may be visible to the shooter • Follow these steps: o Lock out Ø Lock doors (If possible) Ø Barricade doors/Create trip hazards o Lights out Ø Turn out all lights in the room Ø Silence cell phones and do not use
Take Out • When shooter will or has entered • Follow these steps: o Plan out Ø Distractors-Throw items at shooter Ø Attackers-Take down the shooter o Spread out Ø Do no cluster together for comfort Ø More difficult for the shooter

Active Shooter Prevention • Recognize disturbing and disruptive behavior o Longer behavior is ignored the more it will persist and worsen o Make behavior expectations clear of students • Division of Student Affairs o Assist and support students and employees with student issues o If you need direction on dealing with a student, please call Ø Ø Dr. Trisha Van Duser (817 -735 -2508) Emily Mire (817 -735 -5172) Can talk to and refer the student to where they need to go Can refer you who to talk to about an issue with a student

Culture of Preparedness • Know your surroundings and have a plan o Visit emergency. unthsc. edu for evacuation maps o Figure out where you would go or hide in a building • Provide safety briefing at first department meeting each semester • Discuss and review procedures at safety committee meetings • Think of possible scenarios to keep in a planning mindset • Check and update your Red Alert info each semester
