ACTIVE SHOOTER CODE_____ HOW TO RESPOND ACTIVE SHOOTER IN YOUR VICINITY 1. GET OUT 2. HIDE OUT 3. CALL OUT • If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate. • Leave your belongings behind • Help patients, visitors and others escape, if possible. • If you cannot evacuate, hide in an area out of the shooter’s view. • Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors. • When safe to do so, dial the emergency line at ____and say “Code _____ with your location. • Call 911. 4. TAKE OUT- As a last resort, an only when your life is in imminent danger: • Attempt to incapacitate the active shooter. • Act with physical aggression and throw items at the shooter. UPON HEARING “CODE ______” ANNOUNCEMENT 1. DO NOT go to the area specified in the Code Silver announcement. This is an extremely dangerous situation. 2. HIDE OUT: • Seek shelter in a room in which you can lock the door. Barricade the door with heavy items if possible. If safe to do so, remove all patients, visitors and others to the room, assisting the disabled. • Close the door to the rooms of non-ambulatory patients. • Remain quiet- silence anything that can make noise. • Evacuate only when instructed to do so by police or security staff or until hearing “All Clear, Code Silver” announcement. WHAT TO DO WHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRIVES • Remain calm, and follow officers’ instructions • Avoid pointing, screaming and/or yelling • Immediately raise hands and spread fingers • Do not stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating, just proceed in the direction from which • Keep hands visible at all times officers are entering the premises • Avoid making quick movements toward officers such as attempting to hold on to them for safety INFORMATION TO PROVIDE TO EMERGENCY LINE AND 911 • Location of the active shooter • Number of shooters, if more than one • Number and type of weapons (long or short guns) • Number of potential victims at the location • Physical description of shooter/s held by the shooter/s WHAT IS AN ACTIVE SHOOTER?
