Passive Voice § Although the passive voice is not any less correct than the active voice, it is less direct, less forceful, and less concise. § Passive voice requires more words to express a thought. § A sentence written in passive voice sounds weak.

Active Voice • Active voice uses strong verbs • It also has the subject of the sentence doing the action. • Whereas in passive voice, the action is done on the subject. • Or the subject is not involved at all.

Examples • Passive Voice: The ball was hit over the outfield fence by Jody. • Active Voice: Jody hit the ball over the outfield fence.

More Examples • Passive Voice: The totals for the new budget were carefully checked. • Active Voice: The club treasurer carefully checked the totals for the new budget.
