A Curriculum for Excellence and Active Literacy Research indicates improved results when literacy is taught in meaningful contexts and using an ‘active’ approach. Stage 2 and 3 build on the foundations developing and expanding skills and abilities. Making Literacy cross curricular and meaningful.

Guided Reading n Each reading group will read two books per week. n Two

Guided Reading n Each reading group will read two books per week. n Two 25 minute reading sessions with the teacher. n Pupils read whole book several times; with teacher, independently, with partner and at home. n Taught session includes a walk-through of text, a look at tricky words, reading aloud alone and with a partner and a focussed look at a particular aspect of the text – very intensive. n Pupils then complete follow-up tasks which assess comprehension and encourage interaction with text.

Writing n Very important that pupils write every day. n Follow-up tasks from Guided

Writing n Very important that pupils write every day. n Follow-up tasks from Guided Reading will always require the pupils to write. n Independent, active activities will always involve some writing. n Alongside all of this, pupils still need to be taught how to write. n One taught writing lesson per week related to a meaningful context created within the classroom.

Homework n Stage 2 & 3 pupils should spend no longer than 25 minutes
