Activator Draw the diagram below and label each
Activator – Draw the diagram below and label each blank with the following terms: boiling point, melting point, solid, liquid, gas.
Folder Set-Up When you get a folder, write your name on the small tab at the top and on the front. I will be passing back papers that all need to stay in your folders. I will be passing back lots of papers today!
Properties of Matter – Flammability, Odor, Solubility SEPTEMBER 19, 2017
Objective Students will be able to identify properties of substances such as flammability, odor, and solubility.
Connection Last week we started talking about properties of matter, or characteristics used to describe matter melting point and boiling point Today we are going to learn about three more properties of matter.
Solubility is a chemical property referring to the ability for a substance to dissolve. When this happens, it creates a solution, otherwise known as a homogeneous mixture. Substances that are soluble: salt, sugar Substances that are insoluble: sand, rice
Solubility Solute: the substance that dissolves (salt) Solvent: the substance that the solute dissolves in (water)
Flammability is the chemical property for how easily something can burn Rating Substances Degree of flammability Examples are given a rating for how flammable they are. 0 Materials that will not burn water 1 Materials that must be preheated before they will ignite lubricating oils cooking oils 2 Materials that must be moderately heated or exposed to relatively high ambient temperatures before they will ignite diesel fuel Rainbow Flames 3 Liquids and solids that can ignite under almost all temperature conditions Gasoline acetone 4 Materials which will rapidly vaporize at atmospheric pressure and normal temperatures, or are readily dispersed in air and which burn readily natural gas propane butane
Odor is a property referring to the scent or fragrance of a substance. This is considered a physical property, because it can be observed without changing the substance. Some odors are pleasant, some are unpleasant, and some substances have no odor at all.
Check for Understanding 1. ________ is the property that describes how well a substance dissolves. Solute B. Solubility C. Solvent A. 2. _____ refers to the substance that is dissolving, and _____ refers to the substance that it is dissolving in. Solvent; solute B. Solubility; solute C. Solute; solvent A.
Check for Understanding 1. Flammability is a property that a substance either has or does not have. True B. False A. 2. The more flammable a substance is, the lower the rating it gets on the flammability scale. A. True B. False
Check for Understanding 1. The property of having a scent or fragrance is called ______. A. Odor B. Flammability C. Solubility
Brainstorming Brainstorm at least three substances that fall into each category: Flammable Non-Flammable Soluble Insoluble Has an odor No odor
Exit Ticket Do you think that it is important for scientists to know about the properties of a substance before an experiment? Why or why not? Folder Set-Up When you get a folder, write your name on the small tab at the top and on the front. I will be passing back papers that all need to stay in your folders.
