ACTION RESEARCH: LEARNING VOCABULARY THROUGH CARTOON MOVIE By Fitria Saputri
Introduction The important of learning vocabulary to young learner Nunan (1991) argues, “Learning vocabulary in the very early stages is more fundamental than grammar, since without vocabulary one would not be able to use the structures and functions for effective communications. ” The difficulties of learning vocabulary “The difficulties were faced by the researcher’s little brother in learning vocabulary It can be seen when he always asks the researcher, his sister, to translate English words, such as, earth, air, park, tree, and many more. He also admits that he always asks his English teacher at school to translate English words during learning or doing some exercises even in the mid or final exam. ”
My research Video can enrich English vocabulary “Video is also believed to have a nurturing value for instruction and to serve as an effective way to motivate learners, maintain their attention, and provide learning satisfaction. ” (Pan, 2012) Study of the relevant research Yuksel and Tanriverdi (2009) in their study argue, “Viewing the movie clip has helped the participants of the current study develop their vocabulary knowledge regardless of their absence and presence of captions, as the results of the study revealed the participants made significant progress in their vocabulary knowledge after the viewing the movie clip while focusing on the meaningful flow of conversations. ”
The important of scaffolding “Scaffolds are tools, strategies, and guides which support students in attaining a higher level of understanding; one which would be impossible if students worked on their own. ” (Brush and Saye, 2002)
Formulation of the Problem How is the impact of cartoon movie on researcher’s little brothers’ English vocabulary?
Method of the Research Action research Anne Burns (2010): “The central idea of the action part of AR is to intervene in a deliberate way in the problematic situation in order to bring about changes and, even better, improvements in practice. Importantly, the improvements that happen in AR are ones based on information (or to use the research term, data) that an action researcher collects systematically. ”
Participant of the Research My little brother: 1. Can build a good working rapport. 2. Can access and communicate each other easily because we lived together in the same place. 3. Have a genuine interest to support him to succeed.
Technique of Collecting the Data Observation. Interview.
Technique of Analyzing the Data Miles and Huberman theory (1994) and Bruner theory (1974). 1. Data reduction. 2. Data display. 3. Conclusion drawing or verification.
Research Timeline
Research Result Cycle 1 = 65 new English words and 9 sentences. Cycle 2 = 58 new English words and 15 sentences. Total = 123 new English words and 24 sentences.
Conclusion 1. Negotiating in choosing the cartoon movies can engage the researcher’s little brother and can make him interested in learning English vocabulary. 2. Motivating him to learn English more. 3. Scaffolding him during watching cartoon movies can help him understand more and achieve the successful learning process. 4.
