The National Standards n Communication n Cultures n Connections n Comparisons n Communities
Communication n Divided into three domains: Ø Interpersonal (1. 1) Ø Interpretive (1. 2) Ø Presentational (1. 3)
Communication 1. 1 Interpersonal Ø Ø Student to student communication, not teacher to student Live or through technology
Communication 1. 2 Interpretive Ø Information only in ASL Ø Subtitles, captions, and voicing do not meet the standards Ø Refers to the process of comprehending material, not interpreting from ASL to English
Communication 1. 3 Presentational Ø Ø Intended to develop register skills Memorizing/preparing material is emphasized, not “off the cuff” Recording information is emphasized Know the difference of what makes a good and bad presentation Record your opinion on a current event within the Deaf community
Cultures Divided into two domains: Ø Practices & Perspectives (2. 1) Ø Products & Perspectives (2. 2)
Cultures 2. 1 Practices & Perspectives Ø Understanding the “why” behind the practice is emphasized
Cultures 2. 2 Products & Perspectives Ø Includes tangible items (art, film, etc. ) and intangible items (Deafhood, De’Via, Audism, etc. ) Ø “Perspective” refers to understanding how and why a product reflects and is a part of Deaf culture
Connections n Divided into two domains: Ø Connecting With Other Disciplines (3. 1) Ø Acquiring Information & Unique Perspectives (3. 2)
Connections 3. 1 Connecting With Other Disciplines Ø Discuss any topic, whether related to Deaf culture or not. Debate the upcoming presidential election
Connections 3. 2 Acquiring Information & Distinct Perspectives Ø Learning information and perspectives only available in ASL View an ASL joke and discuss its perspective on Deaf and non-deaf individuals
Comparisons 4. 1 Comparing Languages Ø Not limited to English-ASL comparisons; can use ASL-LSF or other languages
Comparisons 4. 2 Comparing Cultures Ø Comparing cultures between hearing and deaf -- also can compare other cultures.
Communities Divided into two domains: Ø Using ASL Beyond the Classroom (5. 1) Ø Life-long Learning & Enjoyment (5. 2)
Communities 5. 1 Using ASL Beyond the Classroom Ø Emphasis is on use of language, not simply observing a Deaf event Plan and organize a trip to a Deaf senior’s center to collect oral histories
Communities 5. 2 Life-Long Learning & Enjoyment Ø Goal is to encourage students to continue participating in the Deaf community long after completing ASL study Attend a Deaf Idol competition in person or view it on the internet
