The first step pyramids were built by King Djoser. King Snefru and his son, Khufu, innovated the pyramid design to look smooth on the outside. Middle Kingdom About 2055 BC Egypt A country found in the North of Africa and West Asia River Nile A long, snaking river that flows through the heart of Egypt. Gold mines produced great wealth, writing and crafts became an everyday way of life. This period was one of great power and wealth, including a female Queen – Hatshepsut. Great Kings ruled such as Amenhotep III and Ramesses II.
