CAREERS IN ACCOUNTING Your accounting degree is a path to many different career opportunities! Private Sector > Companies like Boeing, Amazon, Microsoft and many more Government or Not for Profit > The State Auditor, IRS, Department of Revenue, various regulatory agencies, etc. Public Accounting > Independent Third Party examines and attests the financial statements and supporting systems of client companies to see if their financial statements fairly represent the results, financial position, and cash flows of the clients.

PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS > Make sure to include on your resume… – GPA – Graduation date – CPA eligibility – Beta Alpha Psi involvement – Other involvement & leadership roles – Work experience
PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS, 2 of 2 > For your cover letters… – Address which position you are applying for – State how you plan to complete your 5 th year requirements (i. e. when will you be CPA eligible? ) > Have your resume reviewed by Career Services – Request an online resume or cover letter review enroll in the Canvas site on our Website. You can upload your materials and receive feedback within 2 business days. – Make an appointment with Career Services to have your resume and cover letter reviewed!
TIMELINE > Events (September-October) – Pre-recruiting BAP Events – BAP Meetings throughout the quarter – Employer events in Handshake > Handshake applications (September-October) – Deadlines begin in mid- to late-September > Virtual-Campus Interviews (October) – Occur throughout October – Note that some firms are conducting interviews that are not directly connected to campus interviews
TIMELINE, 2 of 3 > Second round interviews (October-November) – Interviewing virtually with the firms > Offers (November-December) – Usually out by mid-November, varies by firm > Accepting an offer – Once you accept an offer your job or internship search ends at that point – Notify all other firms that you are withdrawing from the process
TIMELINE, 3 of 3 > Keep Career Services informed of your process – When you have accepted/rejected an offer, please let Career Services know. – We can also help with job offer negotiation (make an appointment with Career Services to talk through your options).

YOUR JOB SEARCH, 2 OF 2 > Create and keep your profiles up-to-date > Read job postings carefully > Network, network > Balance classes, your job search, and life – Treat your job search like a class – Schedule time to work on your job search > Applications, resumes, cover letters, profiles, etc. – Schedule time to answer and send emails daily
COMMUNICATION IS KEY > Checking and organizing your email – Check email daily – Create folders to avoid losing emails > Employers communication – May come in a variety of ways > > > Handshake Other recruiting systems Email > Respond to email within 24 -48 hours
GETTING STARTED ON HANDSHAKE > Connect to Handshake from the Career Services website – Log-in with your Net. ID and create a profile > Tip: upload a resume and let Handshake pull your experiences from that to complete your profile faster. – Review what Handshake pulls from your resume, add/edit as needed and make your resume and profile public so employers can find you.
HANDSHAKE NEXT STEPS > Complete your profile, make it public to employers > Update Career Interests(under “Profile”) so Handshake can flag opportunities for you. > Click the Jobs tab to search for jobs, internships and on-campus opportunitiesand create job alerts.
FINDING VIRTUAL-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS > Under the “On-Campus Interviews” tab, filter by industry, employer or campus location – Tip: you can ‘favorite’ jobs that haven’t opened yet to get back to them more easily. > Each interview listed has a related job – you must apply through the job (not the interview itself). > The job description will say whether you must apply through Handshake, the company site or both (read carefully!)
APPLYING > To apply, you must upload application materials to Handshake: – “Documents” is under your name in the top-most menu – Label your document (ex. Clark Nuber Resume Last Name, Deloitte Cover Letter Your Name, etc. ) > When you click “Apply” in a job description, it will prompt you to select the documents you wish to submit. > You can track your submitted applications under the “Jobs” tab
SCHEDULING INTERVIEWS > Tip: be sure to check your notification preferences (in the drop-down menu under your name) to receive a prompt notification if you are selected for an interview. > If your application has been accepted for an interview, click the schedule and select a timeslot. > Questions about using Handshake? The “Help Center” (bottom of every Handshake page) has step-by-step tutorials and 2 -minute training videos!
