Accountability CIM – Management Module
Accountability is a problem Around the world ministries do not want accountability for fairly valid reasons But the absence of accountability often leads to a slow creep of corruption Absence of accountability also leads to weak and irrational decisions that destroy the ministry
Examples of accountability II Cor 8: 20 Avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us – NKJV Rom 13: 1 -2 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves Acts 14: 27 – reporting back to Antioch Acts 15 – taking the dispute to Jerusalem
Reasons for rejecting accountability The universal feeling is that accountability makes ministries unwieldy and unable to respond to situation rapidly They feel that decision making becomes cumbersome and brings the ministry to a standstill Restrictions are imposed by the accounting body To obtain a consensus is difficult
Benefits of accountability Better decision making as they have to be thought through In times of confusion the accountability structure helps to think issues out The accountability structure provides peer support to the executive The accountability structure can form committees to assist in special areas
Accountability is not optional But it should not become a formal meeting of legal obligations It needs to be structured and not casual The CEO needs to be under the accountability Board and not a part of it It needs to run through the organisation and not just between the CEO and the Board
Culture of accountability Accountability cannot be forced, one must be willing Accountability occurs in an atmosphere of trust Accountability is not control but a mentoring relationship
HOW DO WE CREATE ACCOUNTABILITY? Sharing of information Creating an atmosphere of trust Consulting and listening to others Accountability is not obedience
