ACCESSIBLE CONTENT Word Power Point LMS SCREEN READERS
ACCESSIBLE CONTENT Word, Power. Point, & LMS
SCREEN READERS • Text-to-Speech devices that allow people with visual difficulties to navigate the internet and electronic sources.
TEXT • Use a font that is easy to read, such as Verdana (preferred), Arial, or Helvetica. These magnify well for those with low vision. • Do not use fonts that are difficult to read, including Comic Sans • Do not use color, underline or italics for emphasis: use boldface • Size no smaller than 10 (12 preferred) • Do not use floating text boxes or track changes as they typically make a document inaccessible.
HEADINGS AND SUBHEADINGS • Screen readers use headings and subheadings to help the visually impaired identify parts of a document or web page. Manually changing the size of the font and/or using boldface, underline, or italics is not acceptable and does not serve those using a screen reader.
LISTS • Use the numbered or ordered list/bullet function so screen readers can put the list in the correct context.
HYPERLINKS • Write meaningful text that indicates the link’s destination (e. g. the title of a web page) • Links are a significant method of navigation for everyone, but especially screen readers. When links are embedded with meaningful text, they are much more useful.
TABLE • Create data with column headers, which are essential for users to understand how information is laid out. • Screen readers typically read from left to right, top to bottom, one cell at a time. If cells are split or merged, reading order may be thrown off. • To test the reading order of your table in Word, place your cursor in the first cell and tab over. • Do not leave blank cells.
COLOR • Do not use color alone to convey meaning or emphasis. • Be judicious! • Do not use the highlighter tool. • Use strong contract between foreground (font) and background. • Color Contrast Tools • Tangaru Contrast Finder • Contrast Ratio by Lea Verou • Colour Contrast Analyzer by Paciello Group • Color Contrast Checker by Web. AIM
VIDEO AND FLASHING/BLINKING CONTENT • Include Trigger Warnings when appropriate (PTSD may be triggered) • Eliminate flashing, blinking content or limit to more than 3 seconds. • Can trigger seizures • Remove bright flashes from any videos
CAPTIONS/TRANSCRIPTS • All videos must be closed captioned or have transcripts • Check closed captions before you post a video to ensure they are correct!
ACCESSIBILITY CHECKERS • Use the built-in Accessibility Checker in Word and Power. Point. • Canvas includes an accessibility checker for HTML • HTML Code. Sniffer
