ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 ACCENT: Description, Operation, Results and Achievements Sandro Fuzzi ACCENT Coordinator
ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 Atmospheric change, environment, climate ü Changes in atmospheric composition directly affect many aspects of life, determining climate, air quality and atmospheric inputs to ecosystems ü In turn, these changes affect the fundamental necessities for human existence: human health, food production, ecosystem health and water
ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 What is a Network of Excellence ? üA Network of Excellence (No. E) is primarily a strategic instrument to overcome the fragmentation of European research üIt is aimed at creating a progressive and durable integration of the research capacities of the participants, enhancing at the same time knowledge on the research topic
ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 Aims of ACCENT aims at becoming a platform where European scientists can converge to promote: üa common strategy for research on atmospheric composition change üdevelop and maintain durable means of communication and collaboration within the European scientific community üfacilitate research in this field üoptimise interactions with policy-makers and general public and preparing a new generation of atmospheric scientists and increasing the expertise to a common level across Europe
ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 What does ACCENT include? Jointly executed research A scientific program carried out jointly by the participants involving mainly nationally funded activities Integrating activities Co-ordinate scientific programmes in a complementary way, sharing tools and facilities, exchange of personnel Activities to spread excellence Training of young scientists, dissemination of knowledge, dissemination and communication towards the public, understanding of science, exploitation of results, socio-economic evaluations

ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 ACCENT Review • ACCENT is reviewed annually by independent referees • We had back a few weeks ago the second year review: • Good to excellent project. The project has fully achieved its objectives and technical goals for the period and has even exceeded expectations
www. accent-network. org “The web portal aims to be the main tool for communication within ACCENT, to disseminate knowledge to users outside the network and to provide a platform for dialogue between research and society”

ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 ACCENT Meta. Data. Base An advanced application that allows to search for generic data, but is also customisable to ensure that it can meet the needs of any data type, This ensures that the system will be used by the ACCENT community as well as by general users. In addition, the MDB has advanced filter tools to allow users to 'weed out' unwanted search results And as this system expands in the future, the user will have access to more data, without being overwhelmed by the search results, because only relevant results are returned by the search, thanks to the filter tools.

ACCENT NATIONAL EVENT Vilnius, February 15, 2006 Urbino Questions Q 1: How will hemispheric background levels of ozone change over Europe over the next 20 to 30 years? Q 2: What is the contribution of natural sources to air pollution in Europe? How are these sources likely to change in the future due to climate change and global change? Q 3: What is the contribution of secondary organic aerosols to PM 2. 5 in various parts of Europe and which are the contributing sources? What fraction of SOA is of anthropogenic origin? Q 4: What is the change of air pollution levels when moving from the regional scale to the urban air shed scale? How well can we quantify the relations of air pollution levels between the regional, urban background and street canyon scales, for PM 10, PM 2. 5 and ozone?
