Beam to g-2 • Rebunch primary (8 Ge. V) protons in the Recycler so that rate in detectors is not too high, bunch length < ring revolution time of 147 ns Simulation of rebunched beam – 4 Booster batches every 1. 4 s rebunched into 4 bunches each • Create 3. 1 Ge. V secondary pions off the re-used Pbar target – Rep rate 0. 5 Hz 11 Hz requires new pulsed power supplies for lithium lens and pulsed momentum selection magnet (PMAG) 3 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
• m+ to g 2 ring Beam to g-2 • As pions and protons travel down M 2/M 3 beamline and around Delivery Ring 4 times, ~all pions decay into muons, protons separate in time from muons and can be kicked out • Extract muons down M 4/M 5 line to g-2 ring • After ~4 turns, p separated in time from m+ • Kick into abort septum • 3 Ge. V p, p+, m+ • After ~4 turns almost all p+ decayed M 5 • Extract m+ for g-2 Injection septum • 3 Ge. V p, p+, m+ to Delivery Ring for g-2 • 3 Ge. V p, p+, m+ to M 3 line • 8 Ge. Shutdown to-do list (in progress) • • Install new Delivery Ring pulsed septa magnets Commission target station power supplies for 100 Hz bursts Repair PWCs / Ion Chambers (Ar. CO 2 leaks and stuck motion) Install horizontal corrector magnets in M 3 and D 30 to help with DR injection • Inspect apertures in regions of unexpected high radiation/loss 8 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Install new Delivery Ring pulsed septa magnets • Production by TD was delayed due to vendor issues – Commissioned beam to g-2 using old Pbar septa which can’t pulse at full g-2 repetition rate • Magnets completed by Technical Division in August, then vacuum certification by AD • 1 st magnet installed (injection) • 2 nd magnet (abort) installation this week • Once installed can connect stripline to power supplies and start pulse testing 9 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Commission target station power supplies for 100 Hz bursts • New power supplies for lithium lens and pulsed momentumselection magnet (PMAG) needed to meet the 11. 4 -Hz average / 100 -Hz burst repetition rate • Ran in single-pulse mode for commissioning before shutdown • Test pulsing at design current of 24 k. A, one 100 -Hz burst of 8 pulses every 5 s (1. 6 Hz ave) • Will work up to two bursts of 8 every 1. 4 s (11. 4 Hz ave) • Single-point LOTO prevents pulse testing while in Transport enclosure 10 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Repair PWCs / Ion Chambers • Mechanical issues with motion in and out of beam – Replace screws on anti-vacuum box with lower profile to prevent scraping/binding • Vacuum issues – – Ar. CO 2 leaks Replace Ar. CO 2 tygon tubing with aluminum tubing Install aluminum lines for nitrogen purge New o-rings for the top plate and vacuum top plate Progress through 27 repair steps for 25 devices 11 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Install horizontal corrector magnets in M 3 and D 30 • Not enough horizontal trims in downstream M 3 and D 30 for proper closure of first turn on closed orbit injection kicker C magnet septum magnet VT 747 HT 750 HT 746 VT 306 M 3 DR 12 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Inspect apertures in regions of unexpected high radiation • Measured high residual radiation in places we would not expect to lose beam • Opened up beam pipe to look for obstructions but none found • Will factor into optics tuning when start up after shutdown – Have enlisted help of APC 13 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Commissioning to-do list • Commission proton removal – Has been demonstrated – Optimize beam transmission around Delivery Ring • Commission full-power beam – 16 bunches of 1012 protons every 1. 4 s – Recycler 2. 5 MHz RF rebunching – Target station and Delivery Ring pulsed devices • Optimize DR injection with new septum magnet • Optimize M 4/M 5 line beam transmission • Investigate target station yield vs spot size 14 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Commission proton removal • Proton removal demonstrated to work Muon beam profiles at inflector entrance • But beam transmission around Delivery Ring is poor at 3. 1 Ge. V (ok at 8 Ge. V) – Concept is fundamentally sound, but something is not working properly, both orbit and optics are affected – Unable to use all of the diagnostics available at 8 Ge. V for lower -intensity 3. 1 Ge. V beam – Injection / extraction issues may be contributing significantly – Have enlisted help of APC 15 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Recycler 2. 5 MHz rebunching • One proton removal is complete, we can run higher intensity protons on target • Will continue commissioning of bunch time structure 120 ns rebunch 1 batch into 4 bunches 16 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Commission full-power beam • Two Booster batches injected into Recycler, rebunched into 8 bunches (takes 90 ms), and extracted in 10 ms intervals • Twice per 1. 4 s cycle • Need: more commissioning of Recycler RF, target station power supplies commissioned for 100 -Hz bursts, new Delivery Ring pulsed septa magnets So far rebunch 1 batch into 4 bunches: 1 3 to to Recycler g-2 abort 17 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Optimize DR injection with new septum magnet • Observed DR horizontal orbit distortion which does not fit well to optics model and suggests 7° roll on injection septum • Alignment rechecked and saw no roll, visually inspected and looked ok (below) • New septum magnets being installed during shutdown • Additional correctors in M 3 and D 30 will help steering Injection septum as installed FY 17 run 18 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Optimize M 4/M 5 line beam transmission • Poor efficiency between upstream M 4 and end of M 5 based on Ion Chambers • Both the vertical and horizontal bending regions are complicated, sensitive optics and small apertures • Beam widths on profile monitors are close to what is expected 19 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
M 5 line / injection tuning • Working together with g-2 storage ring experts to tune the M 5 line for optimal injection into the ring 20 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Investigate target station yield • Achieving smaller spot size of sx =sy=0. 15 mm could improve yield by 5 -10% • Currently sx =0. 25 mm sy =0. 30 mm • Expect to take a lot of work 21 Accelerator Status and Plans | M Convery 10/2/17
Schedule • Re-establish beam after shutdown (1 -2 weeks depending on whethere are issues with upstream accelerators) • Commission proton removal (several weeks) • Commission full repetition rate • Optimize for maximum intensity • Detailed run plan (subject to change) – week of Oct 23: upstream accelerators turn on – week of Oct 30: establish beam to Muon Campus – week of Nov 6: DAY/EVE work on Delivery Ring orbits and proton removal, OWL lowrate mixed beam (100: 1 protons to muons) to experiment if desired – week of Nov 13: DAY/EVE work on Delivery Ring orbits and proton removal, OWL lowrate mixed beam to experiment if desired – week of Nov 20: DAY/EVE work on Delivery Ring orbits, proton removal, and increasing rep rate, OWL low-intensity muon beam to experiment if desired – week of Nov 27: DAY/EVE work on increasing rep rate, OWL muon beam to experiment – Dec: muon beam to experiment while working on rep rate and efficiency – Jan: muon beam to experiment 22 10/2/17
