XFEL related activities Following the withdrawal of funding for CELSIUS and CRYRING the university heads of UU+SU+KTH sponsored the creation of a joint center for research in Free-electron laser related issues (2005, 3 x 3 x 1. 5 MSe. K) Three projects following workshop in Kista (Nov 2004) Precision fiducialization for special magnets Surface physics in small beam pipes (short bunches and resistive wakes) Optical Replica Synthesizer to measure ultra-short electron bunches in FLASH V. Optical Replica Synthesizer Problem: measure ultra-short bunches in the 10 s of fs range: EOS, TEO, LOLA, ORS 101115 too fast for electronics (10 Gs/s, 100 ps) but laser folks know (autocorrelation, FROG) Solution: make an optical copy of the electron bunch and analyze that with laser methods. CAI, the Center for Accelerator and Instrumentation Development Cutting edge science at large multi-national facilities CERN for high-energy physics ESRF, ALS, MAX for synchrotron radiation sciences Observatories in Spain and Chile for astronomy This trend continues in the future XFEL, FAIR, ESO/ESA, ESS, Max 4 In-kind contributions for construction and operation for the facility itself and its instrumentation Accelerator or reactor Instrumentation: detector or beam-line (photons or neutrons) Need a strong home base as platform to launch strong 101115 participation in international V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in collaborations Uppsala
CAI: Mission 101115 Platform to participate in multinational research infrastructure facilities Increase collaboration among participating groups Advanced scattering for materials science (#) neutrons (ILL, ESS) photons (ESRF, Max. Lab) RF-breakdown studies for CLIC Accelerator physics Material science Pellet target for PANDA at HESR@FAIR V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala
CAI, the startup phase In 2007 CAI was established (B. Hjörvarsson, chair and T. Ekelöf co-chair, VZ, director) In the KOF 07 evaluation the need for the functionality of CAI was clearly identified. . . and resulted in the funding of positions for two mechanical engineers (CAD design) from the rektor's strategic funds Close relation to the Ångström workshop. We work on a wide portfolio of projects, both inhouse and externally. 101115 V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala
Some CAI projects Pellet tracking system for PANDA 101115 Piezo-driven microstage inside electron-microscope V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala
Some CAI projects, cont'd Sample transfer unit for MAXlab Scattering chamber for LCLS Use 3 D printer for prototyping and even manufacture of devices 101115 V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala
Some CAI projects, cont'd OTR station and filterwheel for TBTS 101115 Probe station to investigate gaseous samples under microscope V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala

Conclusion Within the IFA department of the Tek. Nat faculty we are participating in exciting international accelerator collaborations CLIC/CTF 3 FLASH and Eu. XFEL ESS (in the future) and, at the same time, create a home-base to contribute design capacity through CAI. 101115 V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala
