The Academic Conversation

Faking the Academic Conversation Presenting someone else’s words, ideas, or images as your own work.

Not using citations correctly. Mistakenly leaving out the citation. Misquoting a source. “Blending” in outside passages. Keeping sentence structure & replacing words. Buying a paper online. Turning in an old paper.

Two methods to handle sources in your work: 1. Quote them directly and give them credit (cite). 2. Summarize or paraphrase their work and give them credit (cite). ▫ To summarize or paraphrase correctly, restate in your own words--change the sentence structure and the words.

1. Quotation: Someone else’s words Cain (2013) concludes, “love is essential; gregariousness is optional” (p. 264).

2. Paraphrasing/Summarizing (change sentence structure and words) Cain (2013) asserts that Cain (2013) describes how the industrial revolution helped to create a society that reveres extroverts (p. 21). understanding and valuing introversion benefits not only introverts, but all of society.

Let’s Review! Two Methods to Prevent Plagiarism: Direct quote + citation = NO plagiarism Cain (2013) concludes, “love is essential; gregariousness is optional” (p. 264). (Summary or paraphrase) + citation = NO plagiarism Cain (2013) describes how the industrial revolution helped to create a society that reveres extroverts (p. 21).

What don’t you cite? • General/Common Knowledge or what your audience already knows. ▫ George Washington was the first president of the United States. ▫ Craft brewing is very popular in Portland. • Your own thoughts, ideas, or analysis ▫ Nursing students should drink more craft beer. ▫ On the other hand, intoxicated nursing students may be more likely to forget how to cite correctly.

ü APA in-text citations Author named in parentheses: 3. Research has found that the “use of gruyère in macaroni and cheese results in markedly increased food intake” (Brooks, 2011, p. 18). 4. After the intervention, children increased in the number of books read per week (Smith & Wexwood, 2010).

ü APA in-text citations Secondary Source: s u n bo ! e v mo In an interview, Jay Belsky, a psychology professor, said parents of highly reactive children should be supportive and nurturing and “not harsh, neglectful, or inconsistent” (as cited in Cain, 2013, p. 113).
