ACADEMIC WRITING: FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE

VOCABULARY SET 3 • On the following slides are the 10 vocabulary words you must know • Study the definition • Memorize the part of speech

CONVEY • verb • convey, conveys, conveyed, conveying • synonyms: relay, project • definition: to communicate a message or idea to make it known, or understandable • Examples • 1. Her essay contained lots of advanced vocabulary, which conveyed her understanding of the subject. • 2. I will convey my love for him by buying flowers.

COMPELLING • • adjective verb=to compel (compel, compels, compelled, compelling) synonyms: captivating, powerful definition: inspiring interest, attention, or admiration in a powerful and hard to resist way; not able to be resisted • Examples: • 1. She gave a compelling argument for going to the beach-there was no school! • 2. His eyes were strangely compelling, I could not look away from them.

RELENTLESS • • • adjective adverb=relentlessly synonyms: persistent, ruthless definition: constantly intense; harsh or inflexible Examples: • 1. The heat of the desert was relentless, it did not stop day or night. • 2. My boss is relentless, she never stops giving me extra work!

DISREGARD • noun, verb • noun=disregard, verb=disregard, disregards, disregarded, disregarding • synonyms: ignore, indifference • definition: noun= the action or state of not paying attention to; verb= to pay no attention to • Examples: • 1. She had blatant disregard for the law when she drove through the red light. (NOUN) • 2. We could not disregard the evidence that identified the killer, it was too obvious. (VERB)

INSTILL • verb • instill, instills, instilled, instilling • synonyms: implant, impress • definition: gradually but strongly establish an idea, or an attitude, into a person’s mind • Examples: • 1. My father instilled in me an excellent work ethic, I try to never miss class. • 2. If I have children I will instill them with the importance of being honest.

TRAIT • noun • definition: a distinguishing quality, or characteristic, typically belonging to one person • synonyms: quality, attribute • Examples: • 1. Patience is a trait that runs in my family; we all are very levelheaded. • 2. Typically, women are described using emotional traits, such as being sensitive or nurturing.

DEMEANOR • noun • definition: a person’s outward behavior, how they are acting • synonyms: attitude, appearance • Examples: • 1. His calm demeanor made the crying baby settle down to sleep. • 2. Your demeanor at work should be confident and respectful.

BAN • verb and noun • noun=ban • verb=ban, bans, banned, banning • definition: officially, or legally, prohibit something (make something illegal); • Examples: • 1. They are proposing a ban on e-cigarettes on campus; they would not be allowed at all. • 2. Many sports stadiums have banned glass bottles, because broken glass is a very dangerous.

EXEMPT • adjective • definition: free from an obligation (obligation-something you are forced to do) • synonyms: free from, not subject to • Examples: • 1. I was exempt from taking a foreign language in high school, because I was fluent in French. • 2. The students are exempt from the final exam because their averages were 99%.

EAGER • adjective • adverb: eagerly • definition: strongly wanting to do, or have, something • synonyms: hopeful, impatient • Examples: • 1. She was eager for her brother to come home from college; they hadn’t seen each other in 5 months. • 2. The little boys eagerly opened their Christmas presents; ripping away the wrapping paper as fast as they could.

WORD BUILDING • Words can be changed to fit into different parts of speech • Each word in a different part of speech is used differently • Example: • The VERB ‘suggest’ can be used as the ADVERB ‘suggestively’, the ADJECTIVE ‘suggestive’ and the NOUN ‘suggestion’ • suggest – suggestively – suggestive – suggestion • I suggested (VERB) we go to Hawaii for vacation. • “Are you going to Dubai tonight? ” he asked suggestively (ADVERB). • That was an extremely suggestive (ADJECTIVE) comment. • I am trying to make a suggestion, (NOUN) but you aren’t listening! • (CONTINUED ON NEXT SLIDE)

WORD BUILDING CONTINUED • On the test you will be given the following words: • Explain • Interact • Succeed • Persuade • Identify • Prove • Strategize • Rely • You will be asked to pick a word, and then use it as a specific part of speech • Example: • VERB: She explained the homework to me yesterday. • NOUN: The coach told us the strategy for the soccer game. • STUDY/Memorize the different forms of all the words in the following chart
