Definition of Whistleblowing • • • Whistle blowing is when a worker reports suspected wrongdoing at work. Officially this is called ‘making a disclosure in the public interest’. A worker can report things that aren’t right, are illegal or if anyone at work is neglecting their duties, including: someone’s health and safety is in danger damage to the environment a criminal offence the company isn’t obeying the law (like not having the right insurance) covering up wrongdoing (Gov. (2013) • Although all of these are factors that an individual can Whistle blow upon; Abuse covers three of those factors. Which ones? Definitions of Whistleblowing • ‘’The practice of informing on someone or putting a stop to something’’ (Collins, (2013) • ’’Raising a concern about a wrong doing within an organisation. The concern must be a genuine concern about a crime, criminal offence, miscarriage of justice, dangers to health and safety and of the environment – And the cover up of any of these. ’’ (Whistlblowing Helpzone. Whistle blowing There are three simples steps! – If you follow them you can save someone from further abuse. › Step one: - Check the your organisation’s Whistle blowing procedures › Step two: - Follow them. › Step three: - Tell your manger/ If you can’t contact/ confined in your manager contact a prescribed organisation such as social services or/ and the police. But am I protected? A lot of individuals are scared to Whistle blow due to fear from colleagues and managers. They are scared that they would be treated as the teller and just outcaste! ‘’The Public Interest Disclosure Act (PIDA) 1998 provides legal protection, in certain circumstances, to workers making disclosures in good faith about malpractice. Case Study One Bob is a 45 year old who lives in a residential care home and whilst a female care worker is completing his personal care she makes him have sex with her. One day a different worker completes his personal care and finds bruises all over him. As well as this the worker has noticed Bob withdraw from the activities within the house and has not been wanting to go out in the community for different activities that the whole house normally go to. Case study Two Cindy arrived to work early one day and her colleague did not hear her enter the building; she went into the office finding the morning staff driving into the services user’s money tins.
