Why did Absolute Monarchies Develop? • Centralization of power – Kings and Queens gained more power after the Reformation – Church lost power=More power for kings • Middle Class supported Monarchs – Promised a good climate for business • Colonies allowed Monarchs to live frivolous lives.
Fun Facts • 5’ 5’’ tall – Wore high heels to compensate for short stature • Hated cities • Liked to be called “The Sun King” – He believed all power radiated from him
Louis’ Grand Style • Surrounded himself with luxury – Each meal was a feast • 4 bowls of soup, a whole pheasant, 2 slices of ham, a salad, a plate of pastries, fruit, hard boiled eggs in 1 sitting! – Employed 500 cooks, waiters, and servants – 100 of the most privileged nobles waited each morning for the opportunity to help Louis dress.
