Our Daily Objective • Students will be able to identify relative and absolute locations of the local community they are familiar with.
Relative Location • A relative location is where something is located based on landmarks around it. • Example: The library is right in front of our school: Cornelius Elementary. Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – Cornelius Right across from school!
Absolute Location • An absolute location is the exact address of a place • Example: The library is located at 21105 Catawba Avenue in Cornelius, North Carolina. • Example: Lexington is, you say: “ 38◦ N, 84◦ W” (These are coordinates)

Let’s compare… Which is relative? Which is absolute? • Turn right out of our driveway. Then take a left at the end of Main St. Drive for 1. 5 miles and take a right onto Beach St. Drive for 4 more miles then take a right. You will have arrived at Bojangles. • 2 miles up the street and it should be on your right between a Waffle House and a Teeth Whitening Shop
Today you will come up with both relative and absolute locations of a classroom. • With a partner, you will create a set of relative directions and absolute directions of how to get to our classroom from the back field. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 You will need a sheet of notebook paper and a pencil! Example: • To get to my classroom from the front of the building you need to walk in go down the right hall and look to the right I am after a water fountain and across from the planning room. (Relative) • To get to my classroom from the front of the building you would need to walk straight inside the 2 sets of doors. You must sign in. Take an immediate right. Walk 2 steps and take a left. Then you will walk 25 steps. Look for the classroom number 103. Take a right and you will be in my classroom. (Absolute)
