Getting connected. .
Email When you are registered at Imperial you are given unique CID number, as well as your username and password. Your email All students are given an Office 365 account. Access through office. imperial. ac. uk To log in use your College username @ic. ac. uk and your College password. ALWAYS remember to create a secure password!
Wifi There is Wi. Fi access in most areas across campus and in College halls. Simply go to Imperial-WPA Wi. Fi and log in with your College login details. Guests can use Sky Wi. Fi for free, available throughout College. So don’t give them your username and password.
Phones Most halls have phones and calls to College numbers and incoming calls are free. Calls you can make free of charge • Other College extensions • Local and national numbers (beginning with 01 & 02) • UK mobiles (beginning with 07 but excluding 070 & 076) • Free non-geo numbers (beginning with 0500, 0800 & 0808) • Inclusive non-geo numbers (beginning with 03) Making chargeable calls • To make chargeable calls, like international calls, from your hall telephone requires a phone card. • There are phone cards available which offer cheap calls. As long as your phone card has an access number that you can dial free of charge (such as 0800 or 020) then it work in your halls telephone.
Imperial mobile app The College’s mobile app helps you access College information and services anytime. Use the app to: - Access your course timetable - Find guides to College services and facilities - Access Blackboard - Search campus maps - Check PC availability Download the app via imperial. ac. uk/students/online-services/mobile
ICT for Education
Campus computers We have over 3, 500 computers across College (in Library and teaching rooms) for students to use. Inclusive technology like Claroread, Mind. View and Audio Notetaker are available.
Teaching and Learning Blackboard is Imperial College’s Virtual Learning Environment and is used to collaborate, communicate and deliver courses to students. It includes assignments, quizzes and courses materials. Panopto is used for recording lectures and presentations at Imperial and can capture multiple streams of content at once. Recordings can be viewed during or after the session. Access and help guides to both Panopto and Blackboard can be found on the ICT webpages.
Storing your work (One. Drive for Business) One. Drive for Business (part of Office 365) offers Cloud storage. This gives you a huge amount of free storage – up to five terabytes – equivalent to 200 days of video, or 85, 000 hours of music. • On a personal computer access via the Microsoft app to synchronise the data between the Cloud and your local storage. • On campus computers log into One. Drive for Business via Office 365 online to access files on your One. Drive for Business is a secure place to store your work and recommended by ICT.
Storing your work (Home directory) Every student is given secure personal storage space. Undergraduate students are given 4 GB and Postgraduate students are given 8 GB. It is - Automatically mapped on login as H: - Backed up every night and kept for three months - Able to be connected to from your personal computer as well Contact the ICT Service desk to restore deleted files or use “previous versions” in Explorer
Printing Printers are available across campus to print, scan and photocopy documents. - Documents are sent to a common print queue. Collect it from any touch card printer your College ID card gives you access to. - Print credits are given by the department - You can top up online or via money loaders in the central Library - Or, if you send documents to One. Note, they will be saved to your notes rather than printed out. Select that option when sending your document to print.
Software A range of software you need for your course is available to stream from the ICT Software Hub. The Software Hub provides a wide range of subject specific software which can be accessed at any time and from anywhere as it is streamed from college. Office 365 Students can install Word, Excel, Power. Point, One. Note, and more on up to five PCs and Macs, plus five tablets, including i. Pad. All work can be saved online in One. Drive for Business and accessed from any device. The same software is available on College’s many campus computers.
Research
Are you a researcher? The Research Computing Service (RCS) provides access to powerful computing resources, expert consultancy and training for all researchers. They provide high throughput computing, help processing big data or high end computing to support your research. Unlimited data storage is also available through Box.
Be Secure: working safely online Your College account gives you access to our information systems and services. In the wrong hands your account could be used to access personal data or other sensitive information. You can find tips to stay safe online through the Be Secure webpages
Strong passwords It is your responsibility to keep your password safe and secure. - Do not share your password with anyone - Make your password more than eight characters - Use a phase – e. g. “Thanks 4 thememories” – it’s long but still easy to remember - Don’t reuse passwords across multiple systems/websites - Don’t use weak passwords such as “Imperial 123” as these are very easy to guess.
Scams and Malware College’s network defences caught 113 million spam emails over the past twelve months. But we cannot block all of them. To catch the few that get through our net, you need to be able to spot the signs of a scam. - If in doubt, do not click Can you trust the software you are installing? Check emails carefully Report anything suspicious to ICT Security
Lock up! • Lock your computer/phone when not in use • Log out of your computer • Lock your room door in Hall • Use a pin/passcode to restrict access • Do not leave valuables unattended.
Social networks • Stay safe online • Be sensible when creating personal digital information • Your future employment is as stake • Check your privacy settings in Facebook and elsewhere.
