Treaties: Overview n Agreements negotiated between two or more nations n Between 1763 -1921 over 50 separate treaties were signed between the Crown & Aboriginal groups n Gradual surrender of Native rights in return for reserves, money, food, medicine, & other necessities n Each treaty contained different clauses which described what the aboriginal group(s) in a particular area would actually receive

Numbered Treaties (Notes) n Between 1871 – 1921, 11 treaties were signed with the First Nations of Canada n Land was needed for settlement n Treaties were designed to coincide with the opening of western Canada to new groups of settlers
