2017 BEARING INDUSTRY TRENDS • Auto manufacturing will continue to recover since 2008 and 2009 decline • Increased output in construction, oilfield, and mining equipment • Growth of shipments in engine , turbine and PT equipment with more advanced high value bearing product • This growth will support strong roller bearing demand over other product types • Ball bearing consumption will be healthy but held back due to continued intense low cost competition • Foreign and domestic operations expand their US manufacturing to meet growing domestic demands • US companies will continue to establish overseas production to take advantage of lower labor costs as well as be close to growing markets • Ongoing effort to increase quality performance and increase efficiencies

ANTI COUNTERFEITING
ANTI-COUNTERFEITING EXAMPLES STEEL INDUSTRY • Bearings failed at a steel rolling mill in the U. S. -Chicago area. • Although they showed a well known trademark, the parts were counterfeit and missing functional features that directly led to the failure
ANTI-COUNTERFEITING EXAMPLES MINING INDUSTRY • Bearings were seized in Miami just prior to being shipped to a mining operation in Brazil. • Of poor quality, at over 1 m (3. 2 feet) diameter and over 2500 lbs, they represented a significant safety hazard and financial risk if installed in key equipment.
ANTI-COUNTERFEITING- US GOVERNMENT ENGAGEMENT • U. S. Customs (CBP) seizures of bearings over the past 12 months have reached $1 million in value. • Customs Webinar in February 2014 had 129 unique logins from Ports around the country. • CBP is coordinating multi-port targeted operations related to bearings. • Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) continues to work with ABMA on criminal cases. • Numerous criminal cases are currently in various stages of the development • Efforts are being made to engage Hong Kong in our enforcement efforts.
ANTI-COUNTERFEITING – CUSTOMS PARTNERSHIP § Between 2009 and 2013, Chinese Customs seized over $3 million counterfeit bearing products at their borders en route to 50 different countries including the U. S. § In 2013, U. S. Customs and Border Protection has seized counterfeit bearing products through numerous entry ports with a total estimated retail value of over $1 million. § The World Bearing Association (WBA) raided suspected Chinese facilities and found millions of counterfeit products since 2009. § CBP is changing their structure to move toward Centers for Excellence & Expertise (CEE) ABMA will be presenting to the CEE Centers in addition to the ports and will give customs officers focused areas for search.
2013 CUSTOMS DEVELOPMENT Top 5 ABMA members are contracting with National Cyber. Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) to establish a database • Locate and identify involved parties • Enhance security best practices and procedures • Effectively “neutralize” (seize assets, seize funds. Make arrest, prosecute) through pro-active law enforcement • May include criminal and civil avenues to pursue in coordination with appropriate authorities NCFTA report button can be added to manufacturers websites to help with reporting suspect product. Button can link direct to reporting database.
ANTI-CONTERFEITING FOCUS - CHINA WBA and CHINA • Since 2008, the WBA engagement with Chinese Authorities has facilitated the seizure of more than $3 million counterfeit products at the China border. • The WBA focuses in four regions. • Shandong, Ningbo, Tianjin and Shanghai • Shanghai and Tianjin – Focus in 2013 • Raid Focus on Supply Chain Partners • Government Engagement at Local, State and Law Enforcement. LOBBYING • Two Regions - Xiamen (New) & Qingdao (Revisit) • Summer 2014
FOCUS IN OTHER REGIONS INDIA • • Successful Customs Engagement – December 2013 in Mumbai. • Expecting seizure actions in 2014. Customs Meeting in Chennai (Madras) in 2014. BRAZIL • Vetting Third Party In-Country Providers • ABMA is leading this effort and received proposal from law and investigation firms. • Raise Awareness • Take Police Action - Raid Counterfeiters • Engage Customs
