Abidjan Location : Politic Power : Population : Abidjan is located In the South-East of the Ivory Coast, in the Gulf of Guinea, more precisely on the Ébrié Lagoon. Abidjan is the economic Capital of Ivory Coast, The president Alassane Ouattara lives and works there, at the Abidjan Presidential palace : The people who live in Abidjan are called Abidjaners, they are 4, 7 million (20% of the country population, that's a lot of people!)
Le Plateau is the Ivory Coast business center, an enormous place with a lot of giant buildings, it's where you can also find the Presidency and the National Assembly. It's the main administrative, commercial and financial center of Ivory Coast. In this picture of "Le Plateau" we can see : - the CIE tower (formerly EECI) near the roundabout - The Presidency (The big park at the West)) - The St Paul Cathedral (Far Away) - The Administrative Tower, 5 (At the West of the Cathedral) - The Félix Houphouet Boigny Stadium (at the East of the Cathedral) And a lot of other buildings….
Abidjan Autonomous Port The project started in 1892 when France needed a port in Abidjan to facilitate transports. Abidjan had been chosen over the other cities because of its location, near the city and near the activities of the country. Now the port goes from the Southwest side to the North. West side of Abidjan. It represents 70% of Ivory Coast GDP, 60% of the earning of the country. On this picture we can see the center part of the Port. It continues to the south in Vridi and to the north in "Le Plateau «. The Sea Access is made by the Vridi Canal :
Abidjan International Airport The Félix Houphouet Boigny International Airport (ICAO code : DIAP) is located in the South. East of Abidjan, in Port Bouët , it's the First Airport in Ivory Coast with 1, 6 million passengers in 2015. It's the "Air Côte d'Ivoire" HUB since its creation; it was before "Air Ivoire « hub but the company went bankrupt. The Airport was built in the 70's, the Ivorian Government sold it to a private company : Aeria, in 1996. Picture taken by me, last summer in the Piper PA-28 of the "Aeroclub d'Abidjan"
The Ébrié Lagoon goes from Grand Lahou to Assinie, Abidjan is considered as a Lagoon city because the city was built and adapted to live "with" the Ébrié Lagoon, some structures like the Taxi Boat have been made to permit this Lagoon lifestyle, Abidjan is actually made in 3 parts, the North Part (Le Plateau, Cocody, Yopougon. . . ) the center part who is a semi-Island (Marcory, Koumassy. . . ) and the South Part (Port Bouët. . . ). The Name "Ébrié" comes from an Ivorian ethny who lives around the Lagoon, they live from fishing and harvesting. Alexandre A taxi Boat in the Lagoon
