What is HSWA The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA) lays down wide-ranging duties on employers. Employers must protect the 'health, safety and welfare' at work of all their employees, as well as others on their premises, including temps, casual workers, the self-employed, clients, visitors and the general public.
Health and safety at work act. ØThe purpose of the act. To provide the legislative framework to promote, stimulate and encourage high standards of health and safety at work. ØScope of the act. It covers all people at work. The legislation protects not only people at work but also the general public who may be affected by work activities. ØDuty of employers. Employers must safeguard as is reasonably practicable the health, safety and welfare of people in their employ. ØDuties of employees. Employees have a duty to take reasonable care to avoid injury to them or to others by their work activities.
