BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING TODAY………. I NEED YOU TO KNOW……. THE EARTH IS……. FLAT!
AAIM: HOW DO WE PROVE EARTH’S SHAPE? DO NOW: ANSWER THIS QUESTION - If you went back in time and met up with someone who claimed that Earth is flat, what evidence would you present to them that their assertion is not true? 2. TAKE OUT LAB # 4 AHW: 1. VOCAB DUE 10/2 2. REVIEW DUE MONDAY(TEST NEXT WEEK) 3. LAB # 5 DUE 9/24 4. LAB # 6 (EARTH’S SHAPE) DUE WED 9/25
Is the Earth flat?
Square?
A. Is the Earth a perfect sphere? • The Earth’s true shape is an oblate spheroid • It is slightly flattened at the poles and slightly bulging at the equator.
• However, if drawn to scale, it looks like a perfect sphere!
AAIM: REVIEW FOR TEST PERIOD 2 AND 7 LAB: EARTH’S SHAPE LAB DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT PROLOGUE REVIEW AHW: LAB # 5 DUE TOMORROW
AAIM: How do we prove Earth’s shape? DO NOW: Answer the first Polaris question from handout on page 2.
If the altitude of Polaris equals the latitude of the observer, then answer the following question!!!! This question may require the use of the Earth Science Reference Tables. To an observer in Buffalo, New York, the North Star, Polaris, is always located above the northern horizon at an altitude of approximately 23½° 43° 66½° 90°
AAIM: HOW DO WE PROVE EARTH’S SHAPE? DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT LAB # 5 EGG DROP 2. WHAT WAS THE BEST EVIDENCE OF EARTH’S SHAPE? ? ? AHW: 1. STUDY FOR TEST 2. LAB # 6 DUE TOMORROW(PD 2) 3. VOCAB DUE 10/2
1. Photographs of Earth taken from Space
2. As ships sail away from an observer, they drop below line of sight
3. The shape of Earth’s shadow during an eclipse
4. How could you use weight (gravitational pull) to prove the Earth is squished in at the poles? ?
• You would weigh more at the poles since you are closer to the center of the Earth. • You would weigh less at the equator since you are farther from the center of the Earth.
5. Polaris (North Star) • The North Star is located directly above Earth’s axis
• Therefore, the altitude of Polaris = the latitude of the observer! • This method of navigation can only be used in the Northern Hemisphere
POLARIS
AAIM: 1. REVIEW OF PROOF 2. WHAT ARE EARTH’S SPHERES ? DO NOW: 1. AHW: PD 2 TAKE OUT LAB 6 1. EARTH’S INTERIOR HANDOUT DUE FRIDAY 2. SHAPE AND POLARIS WIZARD QUIZ DUE THUR 10/3 AT 8 AM
If you wanted to find Polaris tonight you would have to look towards the NORTH about halfway up in the sky (42 o) since we are at latitude 42 o. N.

LIST THREE SUBSTANCES YOU SEE
Parts of the Earth: • Lithosphere – solid crust and rigid mantle
Parts of the Lithosphere: • Continental Crust – thick/less dense/light color/granite • Oceanic Crust – thin/more dense/dark color/basalt
Hydrosphere • The water on the Earth • Covers 75% of crust
AAIM: REVIEW OF EARTH’S SPHERES DO NOW: 1. PASS BACK FRIDAY’S HW 2. TAKE OUT VOCAB AND MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON IT AHW: CHECK HW CALENDAR!
Atmosphere • The air (gases) that we breathe • Air is made up of mostly Nitrogen (78%) and Oxygen (21%)
PERIOD 2 AND 7 ONLY! • CLEAR YOUR DESK EXCEPT FOR A PEN OR PENCIL
