Architecture in Georgia transitioned from the Greek revival to metal skyscrapers.
Through the process of transitioning Georgia went through a multitude of architectural changes
Let us start the tour from the 1850 s, when Georgia was going through the Greek revival phase.
Ø 1838: Architectural feats such as the Governor’s mansion made Greek revival an important aspect in Georgia and remained until the 1850 s What did it look like? →Post-and-Lintel feature on the entrance →Low triangular roofs →Symmetrical construction
Old Governor’s Mansion (Milledgeville, Georgia) Central State Hospital (Milledgeville, Georgia) U. S. Custom House (Savannah, Georgia) Austin Leyden House/ Residential (Atlanta, Georgia)
After the Greek revival, Georgia started to move towards: Gothic Revival Italianate Style
Ø 1850: St. John’s Episcopal (Savannah, Georgia) displayed the typical Gothic revival features. Ø 1861 - 1865: Most churches, after the Civil war, adapted to this style What did it look like? → Consists of mainly triangular elements → Darker colors
Ø 1855 – 1859: Italianate was more successful because it was perfect for their weather and was easier maintenance and construction. What did it look like? → More rectangular than Gothic → Asymmetrical → Round/ Segmental Arches (Interior) → Decorated (Interior)
By the 1880 s, the Italianate buildings were considered old – fashioned. New styles of buildings came about in Georgia. Romanesque Queen Anne Neo-Classical
Ø Queen Anne had: → Large central space → Extensive porches → Asymmetrical → Picturesque → Round and mainly made of bricks Ø With this construction technique, architectures succeeded during this time period.
Ø Romanesque and Neo-Classical buildings had competition Ø 1880 – 1893: Romanesque style was used for all types of buildings Its features included: → Arches → Red brick material (monochrome) → Use of horizontal lines → Rustic first floors → Decorative features (Interior)
Ø 1890 s: Neo-Classical Buildings expressed “patriotism and America’s emerging role as a world economic and political power. ” Its main feature that was consistent in all neo-classical buildings was that it’s symmetrical
