• It was an ancient trade route to Ladhak. • It is of great significance to Indian Culture. • The climate in Manali is predominantly cold during winters, and moderately cool during summers. • Rohtang pass is one of the places of interests in Manali. • Manali- is an important hill station in the state of Himachal Pradesh, near the northern end of Kullu valley.

• Leh was capital of Himalayan kingdom of Ladhak, now it is a district in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. • It is at an altitude of 3500 meters. • Leh has a cold, arid climate with long, harsh winters from October to early March. • Due to higher latitudes and mountains, some parts of Leh are covered by cold deserts.
Cold Desert
Cold Desert • Cold deserts occur in temperate regions at higher latitudes • They are formed due to their separation (mainly due to huge mountains) from nearest available sources of moisture. • Examples: Ladhak regions of Jammu & Kashmir. • Largest cold desert in the world is Antarctica.
A Typical Leh House Made of stone, walls coated with thick layer of mud and lime. Flat and strong roofs made of thick tree trunks.
• Let us move towards rocky plains of Changthang. • It is at a height of 5000 meters. • Changpa tribes are the only people living in this place. • They are only 5000 people in Chanthang who always move with their goats and sheep.
Changpa Tribes on Move
Rebo-Tent of Changpas • These tents are made of yak hair-woven to make strips which are stitched together. These strips protect them from icy strong winds. • Unlike usual tents, they are big enough from inside to stand straight
Livelyhood of Changpas • The Sheep is their only tressure-it is from which they get milk, meat, skin for tent, wool for coats and sweaters. • They graze their sheep at higher and colder places so that they have more and softer hair (fur). • From these special goats they get wool for making world famous pashmina wool.
Changpa’s Sheep-grazing
• Srinagar- the Summer Capital of Indian Kashmir. • It is situated in Kashmir valley and lies on the banks of Jhelum river, a tributary of the Indus. • The city is known for its lakes and house boats. • It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handcrafts and dry fruits. • The city has warm summers from June to August, and winters from December.
