A REPORT ON CBCS SYSTEM SUBMITTED TO: MRS. STARS JASMINE, Assistant PROFESSOR. SUBMITTED BY: DEEPIKA. N (2016108011) RAAGAVI. A (2016108039) DEPARTMENT: INDUSTRIAL DATE: 23/03/2017.
PREFACE: What is choice based credit system(CBCS)? A Credit based grading system for the purpose of assessment of the students, which will be acceptable to the global universities. Even Japan are in the practice of the system to measure the level competency. In tune of this above scenario Indian universities and institutions are upcoming in this system. This survey is conducted in order to understand the opinion of students about CBCS system in Anna university.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: We thank the students of College of Engineering Guindy (CEG), Allagappa college of technology (ACT), Madras institute of technology (MIT), School of Architecture (SAP), who gave their valuable ideas and opinion on our survey and we are also grateful for spending their time for our survey.
Introduction: University grants commission as come up with the choice based credit system(CBCS) program in which the students have choice to use from the prescribed courses which are referred as core, elective or minor or soft skill the courses and they can learn at their own pace and the entire assessment is graded-based on the credit system. The basic idea is to look into the needs of students so as to keep up-to-date with development of higher education in India and abroad. CBCS aims to redefined the curriculum keeping pace with the liberalization and globalization in education.
CBCS allows students and easy mode of mobility to various educational institutions spread across the world along with the facility of transfer of credits earned by students. Each courses is assigned with certain credits. When a students passes that course, earns the credits which are based on that course. If a student passes a single course in a semester, he does not have to repeat that course later. The students can earn credits according to his pace. The assessment is done semester wise. Each semester will have 15 -18 weeks of academic work which is equal to 90 teaching days. There is a continuous evaluation of the student not only by the teacher but also by the student himself.
Gradings(according to UGC): Grade Description Points O Outstanding 10 A+ Excellent 9 A Very Good 8 B+ Good 7 B Above Average 6 RA Reappearance - SA Shortage of attendance -
METHODOLOGY: The survey was conducted by students of Industrial engineering, CEG under the partnership of Deepika. N and Raagavi. A. A questionnaire was conducted and it was circulated across hundred students of four main campus of Anna university. The sample selected was mainly Engineering students.
Questionnaire: The questionnaire and the questions are based on the preference of the students towards CBCS system whether this system satisfy students or not.
Result and findings: When a sample of students were asked about the benefit of CBCS system 64% said that it is beneficial and the rest opposed this. Reason: According to the psychology of the students they feel benefit with CBCS system because Ø Scoring high marks is easy, Ø 75% of attendance is comfortable, Ø Students can select their subject, in any department according to their wish, so that they can excel in any field. .
Chart on -Is it is beneficial or not
The Reason for not choosing this system by other 36% may be due to ØThey may don’t find difference between daily readers and last minute readers ØThey Could not find talents among the students due to relative grading, some students cheat themselves. According to the survey majority of the students prefer 2013 Regulation, even a part of 2015 Regulation students prefer 2013 Regulation as the grading depends on maximum pass mark. So they will be getting the chance of testing the knowledge of students.
Even though relative offers good CGPA this isn’t useful. CGPA is only the eligibility level for placement as most of these companies prefer only talented and knowledgeable students, not the students with outstanding CGPA so from this survey we find that 70% of the students feel that this system is not useful for placement. On the survey a section of 50% students is comfortable with cancellation of CBCS system and the remaining 40% of students is not in easy go with this cancellation and 10% says that this system can be changed for the upcoming years.
Conclusion and Recommendations: Currently an important concern which is strongly mentioned in recent times by the UGC, the NAAC(national assessment and accreditation council), is the need to develop a CBCS system in tune with global trends. Recommendation: Ø The adoption of a proper grading system for measuring performance of the learner must be implemented. Ø We need to provide course duration in terms of credit hours and also a minimum as well as a maximum permissible span of time in which this course can be completed by the learner.
ØThe most important aspect of this system is that both teaching and learning should be “credit based “ and not “time based’ ØThe most positive aspect of CBCS is that its students centric. It recognize the important of individual learning wherever and whenever, so students must make use of it. ØIt treats students as individuals who have independent academics needs and interest, so students must acknowledge their talents.
