Effective Assessment Tool What are your thoughts on presentations as a form of assessment? When are they appropriate? Do all students need to know how to present material effectively?
Effective Assessment Tool Highly • Many professions require individuals who are comfortable and confident presenting in front of a group Practical Communication Level of Understanding Higher Level Thinking • Everyone needs to learn how to communicate effectively, both in a group and individual setting • Students really need to know their material to present it effectively • Requires extensive preparation and practice • The development of the presentation allows students the opportunity to be creative and think outside the box • Forces students to encompass various skills in their presentations
Issues with Oral Presentations • Students often underestimate the amount of preparation required to give a presentation • Presentations can sound easier than they are • “Winging it” is never a good idea • Students may have apprehensions about public speaking • Students in the audience may not be sufficiently engaged to learn from peers • May not consider other students ideas as “correct”
Mitigation Techniques Issue Mitigation Preparation • Brainstorm common issues with presentations and how they can be overcome (preparation is key) • Write a list of presentation no-no's • Discuss what makes a good presentation • Hand out the peer evaluation form Public Speaking Fears • Effective grouping of students (outgoing with less outgoing) • Less reliance on even participation in front of the class (depending on the presentation assessment) Class Engagement • Involve students in evaluation and providing feedback • Require that each student in the audience come up with at least one thoughtful question or comment
What Makes a Good Presentation? Directions: Working with the people sitting at your table, determine four criteria for assessing the quality of a presentation. (5 minutes) 1 group member to present your four criteria to the class
Rubric Creation for Presentations Making a presentation rubric will look different depending on the class Developing a rubric together can be a good experience for getting students on the same page. Leave room in the rubric for alteration for different classrooms and/or for individual group differentiation.

Set-Up of Assessment Teachers need to make sure that the assessment style chosen works for you and your students (effective, realistic and manageable) Be careful how many peer assessments are taking place per presentation
What did you learn today? Name a positive reason for using oral presentations for assessment? Name a reason why presentations can be a negative tool for assessment? How can this be overcome?
