Wilson PTSO provides more than $80, 000 a year in grants for teacher supplies and activities. What does the PTSO fund? Annual support for production cost of The Beacon newspapers and magazine Ongoing funding for the library & media center Sheet music, t-shirts, electronic equipment for choir and band President, Vice President, Treasurer & Co-Treasurer, Secretary Audio and other equipment for theater Forensic science supplies, new physics lab equipment, chemistry experiments • Grants Co-Chairs • Fundraising Co-Chairs • Parent Reps for Each Grade Grants across all academic programs to purchase text books, replace outdated equipment and supply educational materials in the classroom • Hospitality Co-Chairs Etching machine for art (and other classes); supplies for ceramics • Communications • SHAPPE Rep Hospitality activities: principal coffees, lunch for staff trainings, etc • LSAT Rep Who is on the PTSO? •

What to expect over the next few Over the summer: months? This school year: Feeder School Family Nights: Spring 9 th Grade Course selection: will occur in your MS classroom ENROLLMENT OPENS IN APRIL: PLEASE ENROLL YOUR SCHOLAR ASAP **school funding depends on it** Graduate from middle school: Congratulations! Note: Please fill out the form to officially withdraw your scholar if he/she is not attending Wilson HS. Your scholar will have SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS due the first day of school for credit. (At a minimum MATH and ENGLISH. ) Check the Wilson website for these assignments, usually posted in mid. June. You can look now to see what last year’s were. Freshman/New Student Orientation: August Fall Sports Tryouts: August *before school starts* Musical Auditions: first week or so of school First Day of School: Schedules handed out. Be in your seat by 8: 55 am.

Course Selection: Important News Incoming 9 th graders will pick classes in their MS this spring. Wilson is on an 8 period schedule. The vast majority of students will not have a choice regarding: Science (Honors Biology); History (Honors World History); English (Honors English I); Math (your scholar’s next level class). Electives: Language, Art, Music, Finance, Other **Keep in mind DCPS graduation requirements** You can familiarize yourself with some electives in the Wilson Course Catalogue on the website. However, not all classes are offered every semester, and not all classes are available to Freshmen. Final schedules are distributed on the first day of school. Promoting INDEPENDENCE, SELF-SUFFICIENCY, & SELF-ADVOCACY!

Teachers are available during STEP, and during after school office hours. Weekly after school math lab for tutoring. Writing Center for help with papers. Library media center and computer lab. College Essay Writing Workshop, weekly leading up to application deadlines. Monthly “Freshman Seminar” first semester on topics of interest. NAVIANCE for college and career planning. Staff include a psychologist, nurse, and five social workers. College and Career Center helps students with career planning, post-high school college (and other) applications, arranges college visits to Wilson, etc. Counseling department assists with scheduling, course selection, academic development, etc.

What have our scholars been up to these past few weeks? All Wilson scholars sat for Twenty students in Denmark on exchange during November. Biomedical students visited a cadaver lab to dissect some bodies. Theater wrapped up two weeks of Matilda! performances. Ten Wilson students have made it to the first round of DC-CAPital All Stars Talent Competition for a chance to win $10, 000 for college. the PSAT or SAT in Oct/Nov. Academy of Hospitality and Tourism students are preparing to manage and run Robotics Gala Dec 17 th. Robotics Club is gearing up for FIRST Competition. Wilson Computer Science headed to Hack. BI competition in Alexandria in Dec. Hackathon! @Wilson Feb 1 st! Model UN Students are at UChicago. Model Congress Students are headed to Yale, after wrapping up a 4 -day competition in DC. Fall Sports Playoffs/Championships recently concluded – Winter Sports are gearing up! Clean & Green Team & Recycling Club working to reduce carbon footprint and promote recycling and a clean Wilson.
