Self-registration Ten frames and individual photos. A great opportunity for mathematical language and discussion in a practical situation. One child arrived and picked up his photo. He looked at the ten frame that others had begun to fill. ” 6 are on already and me, 1 more is 7. ” Another child next to him had a look: “ 3 to get to 10, ” he commented, counting the 3 blank squares. “ 7 add 3 is 10. ” Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

Splat square- at register time A child is chosen to find and click on the number of the children that are present. They need to work out the answer if anyone is absent. The whole class counts from number one to that number whilst the teacher splats each number square. (They love the sound!) The teacher then asks a number of questions, choosing a child to splat the answer. Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

In the past 10 days we have hosted 14 eggs that hatched into 14 very cute chicks! It has been a great learning experience for the children with maths throughout eg: • Recording the temperature of the incubator. • Counting eggs … and then how many chicks had hatched! Recording it. • Problem solving – if there are 14 eggs and 1 still hasn’t hatched, how many chicks have we got? • Estimation – how many duplo bricks does a chick weigh? (7!)
