A newbies beginners guide to Who should I
A newbie’s beginner’s guide to:
@Who should I follow? • Right answer – doesn’t exist • Look for benefits of following @someone – Don’t follow tweeps just b/c they follow you • Following > Followers = some suspicion – Spam follow lots; good accounts are followed by lots • Use ‘Find People’ option – Look for people/biz you know & are interested in • Subscribe to ‘Lists’ – Able to follow tweets w/o following tweeps
For starters: #PR suggestions @PRwise – founded Newswise @PRsaraevans – founded #journchat @Culpwrit – Ron Culp @David. Spinks – founded #u 30 pro @CMM_PR – network based PR firm @Mark. Ragan. CEO – publisher of PRdaily. com @dbreakenridge – founded #prstudchat @valeriesimon – PR pro, mom, personality @calperowitz – EVP Lippe Taylor PR @JDEbberly – great resource @problogger – pro blogger! @heatherhuhman – intern resource

What should I tweet about? • Be the followed you want to follow – Anything! NOT everything! • Tweet useful and relevant information – Engage • Ask questions AND answer questions – 2 way communication – Provoke conversation • Turn ideas into questions • RT tweets you like from tweeps/biz you like
Should I tweet only #PR content? • No – tweet what interests you/others – If #PR is what you’re interested in, tweet #PR • Give your personality some PR – Personality helps build your brand – The only separation from the next tweep • Robots aren’t friends – There are #PR-only accounts that do that • Follow them and RT
What about personal tweeting? • Again, TMI is TMI – Act like Mom is tweeting/listening in • Twitter as an office environment – Be yourself, but be your professional self – Bosses (#PR pros) can hear (see) what you’re saying (tweeting) to your coworkers (#PR studs & friends) • Have fun! Joke around! ; ) – If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you shouldn’t be doing it
What topics should I avoid? • Don’t be too personal (we aren’t that other SM site!) – TMI is TMI no matter where you post it • Avoid sensitive/controversial topics – Any user can flag or report you as spam – Don’t be afraid to ignore tweets directed to you • Know what you’re talking about – You’re here to brand yourself – make it a good one
How often should I tweet? • As often as you’d like! – There are no limits or quotas • Conversation is encouraged but not required • Don’t be annoying/overdo it – Mention if you’re going to tweet excessively for a short time (#journchat) • May lose followers • 24/7 presence isn’t uncommon – News doesn’t take a break • Mobile apps
How do I start a professional relationship? • Do your research – Know who you’re talking to & what you’re talking about • Don’t initiate pointless conversation – Have a goal/desired outcome in mind – Use your research to relate to (or flatter) them • Treat them as professionals – Introduce yourself – RT their tweets • Engage beyond Twitter – Read and comment on blogs or promote your own
What chats should I participate in? • Follow any # of interest – Don’t have to tweet • Use recommendations • Make your own – Add # to any word • Explore on your own • Search wthashtag. com for trending chats & topics • • I have followed: #PRStud. Chat #journchat #blogchat #u 30 pr
Final suggestions • • • Be the person you want to follow you. Don’t make your account private. Twitter backgrounds: a billboard to promote yourself. Pretend you’re in a cubicle when using Twitter. Use lists and follow others’ lists! Don’t be afraid to ask questions! RT tweets you like and those you want to build a relationship with. Use DM’s to ask for emails/contact info. Use DM’s for questionable/sensitive topics if needed. EXPLORE! It’s how you learn – then teach me! NETWORK!
