A MOTHER’S FAITH Exodus 2: 1 -10
Parenting Is Difficult • For some, motherhood is unexpected. • For physical reasons, sometimes motherhood is impossible. • For some (all), motherhood brings heartache. • Some are poorly equipped to be mothers. • Science question for 4 th graders: “My name has 6 letters. The first one is M. I pick up things”
In Spite Of The Difficulties • We keep volunteering for the job. • There are blessings to go along with the difficulties. • Of all people who have influenced you, who was most important? • Teachers, friend, spouse? • 42% of men and 53% of women said their mothers
The Israelites In Egypt • All is going great – Until – “”There arose a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph” (Ex. 1: 8). • From honored guests to slaves. • Still, blessed by God. • The Jewish mid-wives courage. • Jochebed – The woman of Faith.
Faith “Inherited” • A godly family – Num. 26: 59 – Tribe of Levi. To be the priestly tribe. • How important is faith as a family virtue! • Deut. 6: 4 ff; Eph. 6: 4. • “Nurture” – Training about God by example and instruction. • “Admonition” – To draw attention thru mild rebuke or warning.
• V. 2 – Jochebed knew about Pharaoh’s order for death of the boys. • Can you imagine how frantic she was about caring for Moses? • How different in our society – abortion, abandonment, abuse. • Faith “received” is a great advantage.
Faith Exhibited • 2: 2 ff – Miriam stationed to keep watch. • Did Jochebed expect Pharaoh’s daughter to find Moses – the beautiful child? • Did she pray about being the child’s caregiver? • Throughout the Word, special attention is given to women like Jochebed. • I Tim. 5: 10; 2 Tim. 1: 5;
Mary, Elizabeth, Dorcus, Lydia. Great women who sacrificed to serve. Like so many today who teach Bible classes throughout the years. We raise them, and anxiously watch as they leave home. Prov. 22: 6 It takes great faith to turn loose.
Results Of Faith • Vs. 9 -10 • She watched him grow up. • Luke 2: 51 – did she save a lock of his hair. Mothers do things like that. • She saw him grow in faith. Faith isn’t inherited any more than sin is. • Society influences us toward humanism, materialism, mysticism, etc. • We start them on the road to faith. Heb. 11: 23 f
