Where environmental monitoring fits in to optimization. Demand Supply Generation

Why should you care about environmental monitoring? • Electricity is the largest controllable line item on a data center P&L. • On average 42% percent of the electricity spend is attributed to cooling. • This can only be safely reduced with the appropriate level of environmental monitoring. This comes with its own set of challenges. • The goal of environmental monitoring is to reduce the cooling electricity spend. • Cooling electricity spend can typically be reduced to ~20% with little to no Cap. Ex. • Safely increase supply air temperature, deliver the cooling where it is needed, harvest savings on the cooling supply and generation.

What makes environmental monitoring a challenge? First principles problems in data centers.

What makes environmental monitoring a challenge? Environmental monitoring only pays of if: • It is easy to manage. Total cost of ownership needs to considered. • The system gathers the right data with enough context to optimize. • It can evolve and cope with your data center as it changes.

How to approach environmental monitoring. • Industry best practices state: • Hotter is better, to a point. • Hot spots and cold spots reduce efficiency and drive risk up. • Cold / hot air containment increases efficiency and reduces risk. • A good environmental monitoring system should help you with these to reduce your electric bill.

Key things to measure and why. Rack level vs. area monitoring.

Key things to measure and why. Location aware rack level monitoring.

Key things to measure and why. Rack level + cooling supply monitoring.

Getting to an optimized state. Utilize the right environmental monitoring: • Identify, locate, and solves issues. • • Create a consistent supply air pressure. Create consistent rack inlet temperatures. Turn up the supply air temperature setpoint & reduce airflow. In turn, optimize cooling generation to run equipment more efficiently and increase economization potential.
