Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the national holiday held every year on the third Monday in January (this year Jan. 21, 2013). The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. The holiday is a National Day of Service in King's memory. As the official MLK National Day of Service, the nation is called to remember his legacy through service and social leadership. Just as King believed we all can make a difference to end discrimination, he believed everyone had the power to uplift society through service. While President Obama is sworn in for his second term, volunteers around the country will be rolling up their sleeves to help their communities big and small.
In Other News n n n Airline after airline pulled Boeing's marquee 787 Dreamliner from service Thursday, following the lead of regulators who are now reviewing the aircraft's battery and electrical systems. With 787 s already grounded by heavy users Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered all U. S. -based Dreamliners out of service until a problem with the aircraft's battery system is diagnosed and fixed. Despite supporters' hopes that this time it's different, President Barack Obama's new call for restricting some semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines will face deeply entrenched resistance in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and could be a long shot even in the Democratic-led Senate. Chip Kelly is the Philadelphia Eagles new head coach. Kelly told reporters he was sold on the Eagles the first time, but his ties to Oregon made it a tough decision. "Philadelphia is a great city. It's an iconic franchise. It's got an unbelievable owner. But I left some great people back in Oregon and that was the tough part. The human side of this whole thing, " Kelly said.
