A LEVEL – YEAR 1 OF THE FULL A LEVEL OR FOR THE 1 YEAR AS The English Legal System (year 1) An introduction to law and how it developed in the English Legal System. Solicitors, barristers, legal executives & judges Civil courts, cases, appeals & ways of sorting out your disputes away from the courts. Criminal courts, cases, magistrates, juries and different types of sentences Where people can go for legal advice and the different ways they can pay for it or fund it. Law Making (year 1) Laws made by Parliament Laws made by other bodies when Parliament delegates (hands over) law making powers… (councils, businesses and in times of emergency!) Laws made by judges in cases Making laws about new things and changing laws to reflect changed views, advances in technology & medicine etc. Criminal Law (year 1) Basic rules and ideas about criminal law The law/rules about non-fatal offences which includes: assault, battery, actual bodily harm (ABH), grievous bodily hard (GBH) and wounding The Law of Tort (year 1) Basic rules and ideas about tort law (civil wrongdoing) The law/rules about suing someone/bringing a claim for “negligence” The law/rules about suing someone /bringing a claim for harm, injury or loss you suffered on their premises – for lawful visitors and trespassers Damages (the different types of compensation £ you can claim for)

A LEVEL – YEAR 2 OF THE FULL A LEVEL Criminal Law (year 2) Tort Law (year 2) Further Law (year 2) Fatal offences (murder, manslaughter) Defences (insanity, automatism, intoxication, self-defence, consent to risk of physical harm/injury and duress/threats forcing someone to commit a crime) Property offences (theft, robbery and burglary) Attempted crimes (e. g. attempted murder) Torts against land (e. g. neighbour disputes) – nuisances (which prevent you from enjoying your property or damage it) etc. Vicarious liability claimssituations where an employer is liable for the negligent or criminal acts of their employee and may have to pay up! Defences in tort law- the victims own negligence ( e. g. not wearing a seatbelt) contributed to the damage suffered, the victim consented to the risk etc. Injunctions- court orders to stop someone doing something FURTHER LAW(big ideas about law) Justice (what does it mean, what does the law do to try to ensure justice. Where has it achieved it & miscarriages of justice Morals (should laws be based on ideas of what is morally right and wrong- or not? ) Society- (how does society influence the laws we make and how does the law influence the way society behaves? Do laws control society? HUMAN RIGHTS An introduction to the history of human rights law (Magna Carta to The Human Rights Act 1998 & today!) Article 5 - right to liberty (freedom and security of person) * Includes studying powers of police to stop, search, arrest etc… Article 6 -right to a fair trial Article 8 - the right to a privacy (family, correspondence, home etc. ) Art 10 - the right to freedom of expression Art 11 -the right to freedom of assembly and association BTEC do not cover any Human Rights law- but do a little extra tort law
