A Level French Success with Care
What will I need to succeed? • • • Be committed - meeting deadline & revising regularly. Be organised - neat and clear notes, and a folder to keep and organise them all. Be prepared to make mistakes (but learn from them, of course)! Be interested in the subject and the countries where the language is spoken. Be open to “contact” with the cultures you will be studying. Using non-contact periods to explore the cultures you are studying.
What do we expect of you? • Recommended grade 6 at GCSE. • Commitment to the language you’ve chosen and a “self-start” attitude to exploring the culture of the language that you are studying. • That you TALK! • Organisation – you will have several teachers who focus on different aspects of the course – keeping your notes in order is essential for reference later. • Commit to languages as a two-year course – especially when considering how language learning works. • To be ready to discuss your views on topics you may never have reflected upon before.
Grammar • Term 1 of Y 12 focuses on equipping you with the grammar knowledge you need for the whole course. • This sets you up to begin the topics and be able to fully access the resources you work with. • It can feel overwhelming at first – but over time, grammar will “sink in” and the work you’ve completed can be referred back to at any point. • Grammar is the “key” to unlocking your ability to really communicate. • Students enjoy understanding “set phrases” they learned for GCSE.

Where next? Why? Many universities offer degrees with languages as “minor” elements. You’ll leave DHFS with the knowledge that you have a far better than average understanding of a culture other than your own. Communication skills will be an excellent addition to whichever future field of study or employment you go into.
