The candidate selected the externally set assignment theme of ‘Timeworn’. Inspiration for this investigation

The candidate selected the externally set assignment theme of ‘Timeworn’. Inspiration for this investigation came from consideration of urban and architectural spaces. The study comprises of a series of photographic images and a series of montage style photographic works. Work is presented in a digital sketchbook format along with the Learner Statement. A small number of outcomes are presented in their original montage form. AO 1 The breadth of the investigation is limited in scope with occasional evidence of exploration. Limited written critical analysis and evaluation with minimal reference to contextual and other sources is made. There is some development of potential ideas, however, responses are limited and interpretations partially informed. Extended writing and supportive annotation is often sketchy and brief. A small number of contextual sources are looked at in a brief manner with a few connections to the candidate’s work being made. More in depth engagement with primary sources might have generated stronger personal responses. AO 2 It is clear that the candidate selects and explores some resources, media and processes, some of which are appropriate. Two digital techniques are considered and these are: HRD image production and cross-processing techniques. One hand editing technique is explored comprising of scratching, tearing and overlaying images. The steps in the progression of creative making work are often entirely undocumented or sometimes documented in a brief and limited way. The candidate applies digitally created filters to own work and there is limited evidence of any personalisation or individuality in the techniques and processes being used. Composition is experimented with to an extent and some more successful outcomes are achieved. Greater discrimination in reviewing the practical developments might have helped the candidate to produce higher quality outcomes. AO 3 There is limited critical reflection on work and progress throughout the study with written aspects being brief and sketchy. The candidate demonstrates a limited ability to record observations, experiences, ideas and insights and to relate these to their intentions. Research and enquiry is limited to the consideration of a few artists and a small number of techniques. Limited attempts are made to develop ideas from initial sources. More direct observation from first hand sources and more photoshoots being conducted might have enabled the candidate to draw from a richer selection of images. This could have enabled the candidate to develop ideas further and to consider a greater number of possible avenues to pursue. AO 4 While it is clear that the candidate has experimented with some different techniques and processes and made an attempt at more personalised responses, there is a limited ability to present imaginative and meaningful responses, with intentions being realised in a limited way. Connections between the different parts of the work are not always made clear and outcomes sometimes appear suddenly. Presentation of responses could have been more imaginative and a variety of potential layouts could have been considered.
