A Guide to Stokeinteignhead
Where is Stokeinteignhead? Our village is in the South-west of England, in the county of Devon. It is between Exeter and Plymouth, close to Torbay. How many people live here? Approximately 600 people.
What does Stokeinteignhead looks like? From the air, the village looks a bit like a spider!. It stretches out from the centre along steep narrow roads. It is about two miles from the sea, is surrounded by countryside and is very beautiful. How old is the village? Very old! It is mentioned in the Domesday book in 1084. Its name then was ‘Stoches’.
What are the buildings like? There are lots of lovely old buildings made of cob with thatched roofs. There also some more modern houses but a lot of these are made to look old.
What used to be here? Our old village hall. They have built new houses but in an old style.
What is the name of this building? The Old Bakery What was it 20 years ago? A tea-room where you could have lovely cream teas!
The Village Shop This is how it used to look but it closed down. The villagers got together and re-opened and renovated it. It is not a post office anymore but is now a community shop run by volunteers.
The village pub is called The Church House Inn.
In 1993 it was badly damaged by a fire.
What do you think this house used to be?
The village forge where horseshoes and other metal objects were made.
Which saint is this building named after? St Andrew How old is it? It was built over 700 years ago in 1270. It has been altered lots of times.
What did we use this building for? This was our school canteen ten years ago.
Where did we go to school when our building was being modernised? We spent nearly a year at the village hall in the Combeinteignhead.
What is this building? The Chasers used to be a restaurant but is now closed.
This is the new village hall.
What happens each year at the Fuzzy Dee?
People are taken up to the top of a hill by tractor and then there is a race down to the middle of the village. The winner of each age group gets a cup. There also refreshments and a bouncy castle.
