English Language • Paper 1 = Explorations in creative reading and writing (80 marks) – Section A (40 marks) reading response and analysis to a fiction text – Section B ( 40 marks) Creative writing • Paper 2 = Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives – Section A (40 marks) reading response, analysis and comparison to two non-fiction texts – Section B (40 marks) Non-fiction writing

English Language • Speaking and Listening • Graded as PASS, MERIT, DISTINCTION • Is printed on results page but does not contribute to marks • Individual presentation 5 -10 minutes • Usually completed in Y 10

English Literature • Paper 1 = Shakespeare and the 19 thcentury novel 1 h 45 – Section A = Romeo and Juliet (34 marks) – Section B = A Christmas Carol (30 marks) • Paper 2 = Modern texts and poetry 2 h 15 – Section A = An Inspector Calls (34 marks) – Section B = Poetry Anthology (30 marks) – Section C = Unseen Poetry (32 marks)

Year 9 • Language and Literature not taught separately. • Two teachers – initials on the timetable indicate the main teacher for correspondence and parents’ evenings. • Reading, writing and speaking and listening skills embedded into all Schemes of Work. • Students will be equipped with all the skills necessary to tackle GCSE in Y 10. • Enrichment and independent learning encouraged throughout Y 9 and KS 4. • Homework issued once a cycle.

The Year Ahead • Autumn: Gothic Horror – The Monkey’s Paw, Frankenstein, genre work, creative writing Poetry/Of Mice and Men • Spring: Shakespearean and real-life heroes and villains. • Summer: Animal Farm Political Speeches

Maths GCSE • Paper 1 = Non - calculator (80 marks) • Paper 2 = Calculator (80 marks) • Paper 3 = Calculator (80 marks) • Foundation = grades 5 - 1 – Core maths that students will require for the future and building skills for transition to higher • Higher = grades 9 – 4 – Extension topics, ideal for students wishing to stay in further education studying maths related subjects • Decisions on tiers are made in year 11

The Science GCSE offers 2 options: Separate sciences: - Worth 3 GCSEs, 1 each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This is offered to approx. the top 20% of students. Letters sent to parents towards the end of Year 9 after mock exams. Students/parents can accept/decline offer. Room for manoeuvre during start of year 10. Combined Science: - worth 2 GCSEs across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Majority of students nationally study Combined. Students still have the option to go onto study Science A levels from Combined.

Year 9 All students start out studying exactly the same content. They will have a two teachers covering content in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Assessments will be on going throughout the year and there will be a mock exam towards the end of year to assess suitability for separate sciences. Year 10 – Accelerated Route (Separate) Two teachers. Separate science students will be taught the remainder of the content from combined science and by the end of the year will have finished this course. There will on going assessments and there will be a mock exam at the end of the year. Year 11 Separate science Two teachers. Students will be taught the additional units for the course. After Easter there will be revision and exam practise. There will be mock exams in November and March. Year 10 – Extended Route (Combined) Two teachers. Combined science students will follow an extended program through Year 10 and part of Year 11 allowing more time for the teaching of the combined science. There will be ongoing assessments and a mock exam at the end of year 10. Year 11 – extended Route (Combined) Two teachers. Students complete the combined course at Christmas. In January there will be revision and exam practise. There will be mock exams in November and March.

Tiers of Entry for Exams – two options, Foundation and Higher Tier Exam Papers In the new course is harder to achieve level 5 on the Higher tier papers. It is policy, following national guidance from the exam board to only enter students for Higher tier if we have evidence that they are consistently performing at a grade 6 or above. Foundation – this is not the underdog tier! Borderline students are more at risk of achieving low grades on the higher paper – in the Foundation they will have more chance of achieving Grade 5’s (equivalent to a low B or high C grade in old money) The decisions regarding tiers are made around February of Year 11
