Learning Disability Nurses • A diminishing number • Need to encourage others into the profession • Maximise outcomes • Lots of work to do • Clarity of purpose
Start with a formulation for life for ourselves and the people we serve? • Adam Leipzig – studied group of professionals – majority not ‘satisfied’ despite all the trappings of success • Recognised there were 5 key questions that helped people to identify their ‘formulation for life’ • Could this formulation help us as learning disability nurses? • If so, what would be the formulation for learning disability nursing?
5 Questions to clarify life’s purpose • Who are you? • What do you do? (confident to teach/perform) • Who do you do it for? • What do those people want or need? • What do they get out of it? Adam Leipzig
Why are these 5 questions powerful? • There are only two questions about you • They force you to be ‘external facing’ • People who serve others are generally happier than those who do not
Formulation for life’s purpose – Adam Leipzig What if we had a formulation for the purpose of a learning disability nurse?
Who are you?
What do you do? Learning disability nurses? • What do you feel confident to deliver, facilitate or teach? • Health interventions • Behavioural interventions • Life skills • Care & Support • Acquisition and/or preservation of human, legal & civil rights
Who do you do it for? Picture them in your mind
What do those people want or need? You don’t have to be everything to everyone You will work out what your unique contribution is People & families should be able to take what they need
What do they get out of it? • How do they change or transform as a result of what you, as a learning disability nurse, give them? • Improved health or sense of wellness? • Acquire skills, knowledge, confidence? • Feel valued? • Empowered? • Safe? • Supported?
What do you get out of it?
A common formulation for life
5 Questions to clarify life’s purpose • Who are you? • What do you do? (confident to teach/perform) • Who do you do it for? • What do those people want or need? • What do they get out of it? Adam Leipzig
