First off, I graded your outlines Check them out and circle the notes you can’t read (sorry about that) I’ll translate for you when we get to the library Make a note of if you want to go straight into your rough draft, or need a brief conference with me (if you feel pretty good, I’d rather you go ahead so I can meet with the people who are in code orange/red on this first day so they can calm down a little and feel better) Though most of you got high scores, a few of you got notes about what to add. IF YOU LEFT SOMETHING OUT, YOU BETTER PUT IT IN YOUR FINAL PAPER

What this rough draft process will be like: You’ll do it all in school Partially so I can help you out right when you need it Partially because ripping it off of the internet becomes relatively pointless But mostly so that you actually write a draft that is rough enough that you’ll be open to improving it (We’ve all written a paper that was awesome, but didn’t fulfill the requirements, but we still thought was great. So we turned in the same thing as the final draft anyway. I respect that, but cannot reward you for it. Sorry. )

Why is it called a rough draft? It’s supposed to be pretty bad. Not crazy bad—I mean don’t keyboard smash and call it an essay But honestly, it’s transforming your outline (a bunch of thoughts and quotes) into one cohesive, well-organized, well-presented work. It’s going to be rough. That’s what it’s supposed to be.

Here’s a list of things to stop worrying about, to make your life a little easier as you write: Trouble with quotes: You have that “Control F” cheat, remember? If one of your quotes doesn’t work, that’s an easy way to find a better one without agonizing over which page it’s on or where to even start looking. Getting a grade: I am not expecting your best work and I’m honestly not here to judge you. I earnestly like you and want to make sure your essays sound awesome. If they are, at first, poorly written, I’ll give you advice, not deductions. All rough drafts get a 20/20 in the formative as long as I can tell you earnestly tried. Fair warning: I am not at all invested in helping people who don’t try. Honestly —people who don’t try are boring. Knowing how to start it: Just copy and paste your thesis statement to the top of your paper and look at my to-do list, and then just type. If it’s bad, just erase and type over it later. A garbage intro that gets you

For once my example is not about Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie. I wrote an essay that used your prompt, requirements, book, etc. And what’s more, I posted my EXTREMELY rough draft online for you to view. My rough draft downfalls: I overwrite, often lose focused as a result, and make at least ten embarrassing grammar/spelling mistakes. You’ll notice I don’t have a conclusion yet. That’s part of my writing process. I write my paper, wait a day, then write my conclusion. It helps me fix inconsistencies and figure out what’s most important for me to end on (I just can’t do it in the moment. ) If you have trouble for conclusions, I highly recommend it.
