A CPD Resource for Recognising and Developing Capability
A CPD Resource for Recognising and Developing Capability in Higher Education Prof. Penny Jane Burke Dr. Anna Bennett & Ms. Catherine Burgess
Introduction 2 Resources developed out of study of student and staff perceptions of student capability, funded by CEEHE (2014) and NCSEHE (2015). What we found from our survey and interviews with students and staff is that capability is developed through great educational experiences and developing students’ sense of their own capability. newcastle. edu. au/ceehe @uon_ceehe
Key points 3 Learning capability is often presumed to be only about innate individual talent/capacity, independent of contexts and relationships. … BUT, instead, it is developed through: - engaging pedagogies - opportunities/resources - engaging curricula newcastle. edu. au/ceehe @uon_ceehe
It’s the elephant in the room…. . • Evocative reflective short film pieces aim to provide opportunity to consider experiences of students • Importance of pedagogy and curricula in the formation of learning capability. • Opportunities for professional development are therefore critical. newcastle. edu. au/ceehe @uon_ceehe 4
