A City of Hudson Public Education Project MISSION
A City of Hudson Public Education Project
MISSION STATEMENT DON’T STRAIN THE DRAIN FIGHT FATS OILS AND GREASES PREVENTION l REDUCTION l ELIMINATION OF FATS , OILS, & GREASES l
What Is The City of Hudson FOG Program l It is a City Education Project to encourage regulated and non-regulated customers to stop putting grease into the City Collection System. l Residents collect grease in containers ( used cans, glass jars, etc). l Residents dispose of grease as a solid waste to be picked up by garbage collector. l Residents to stop pouring FOG down drain l Resident wipe pans before washing l Commercial Training for Proper Disposal of FOG
WHAT IS F. O. G. ? FOG STANDS FOR FATS, OILS, & GREASES IT IS FOUND IN COMMON FOODS AND FOOD INGREDIENTS l l l l MEAT FISH BUTTER COOKING OIL MAYONNAISE GRAVIES SAUSES FOOD SCRAPS
DON’T LET FOG CLOG THE DRAIN l FOG down the drain or into your garbage disposal, will build up over time by sticking to your plumbing lines or your sewer lines l FOG down the drain contributes to the majority of all sewer backups in the City of Hudson. l FOG down the drain cause backup into homes, onto the streets or into local creeks. l FOG can damage streets, parking lots and main lines
A WASTE WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM IS SIMILAR TO THE HUMAN BODY • WASTE WATER FLOWS THROUGH THE PIPES (ATERIES) • PUMPED AT THE LIFT STATIONS (HEART) • CLEANED BY THE WASTE TREATMENT PLANT (KIDNEYS) FOG (CHOLESTEROL) • CLOGS THE PIPES (ARTERIES) • PUMPS WORK HARDER (HEART) • PUMPS FAIL (HEART ATTACK)
HOW GREASE CAUSES A BLOCKAGE § § § The start of a blocked pipe begins when grease collects on the top and sides of the pipe interior. The build-up increases over time when grease and other debris are washed down the drain. Excessive accumulation will restrict the flow of wastewater and can result in a sanitary sewer overflow.
WHAT PROBLEMS DOES FOG CAUSE ? Sink Blockages l Lateral Line Blockages l Main Line Blockages l Manhole Blockages l Lift Station Problems l Sewer System Overflows (SSO) l Burden on Plant l
WHERE DOES GREASE ACCUMILATE ? n n n Grease accumulates directly in lines to cause blockages. Grease accumulates in manholes Grease accumulates in lift stations and grinder pumps
Preventing grease from entering the collection system: • eliminates grease as a cause of blockages • eliminates grease as a danger to the environment • reduces Sanitary Sewer Overflow.
What is SSO ? Sanitary Sewer Overflow Sewage escaping from the collection system. Sewage discharging into our streets. Sewage discharging over land into waters of the state.
What Causes Overflows ? Over 40% caused by blockages in the collection system (EPA Office of Wastewater) One of the leading causes of blockages in the collection system is the accumulation of grease inside the pipes (Texas Municipal League website)
What Impacts Do SSOs Have? Because SSOs contain raw sewage and can occur on land in public spaces, SSOs can create public health and environmental concerns. l SSOs have contributed to beach closures, contamination of drinking water supplies, and other environmental and public health concerns. l
How Is Grease Removed ? After it gets in the lines It’s Expensive! • Skilled manpower • Special equipment • Traffic disruption
What Is Being Done ? n Commercial sources are regulated by City Ordinance n Residential sources are educated by FOG program
Tools For FOG Program l Covered Container l Training l Heat Resistant Bags l Legislation (Ordinances) l Universal Lids l Permits (Grease Traps) l FOG Door Hangers l Inspections (Grease Traps) l Information Pamphlet l Website l Commercial Brochures
NOT IN THE SINK
Other Cities’ Successes Little Rock, Arkansas attributes a 30% reduction in SSOs in residential areas during dry weather to their “Can the Grease” program. l Norfolk, Virginia attributes a similar 30% reduction in SSOs to their “Fight the Fat” program. l
What are Expected Benefits? l Preventing grease from entering the collection system: 1) eliminates grease as a cause of stoppages and 2) eliminates grease as a contaminant during a Sanitary Sewer Overflow. l Reducing SSOs means less pollutants escaping the collection system. l Disposing of grease at landfills greatly reduces the volume of waste material generated by Waste treatment plant.
REMEMBER THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT
NOT THIS
ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOG
