Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) • 8/15*: The festival is held on the 15 th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. It is also known as the Moon Festival or ”Zhong Chou Jie”. • Legend: It began as a harvest festival. The festival was later given a mythological legend of Chang-E, the beautiful lady in the moon: the earth once had 10 suns circling over it, and people lived in pain because of the heat. A strong archer, Hou Yi, saved the world by shooting down 9 suns. And thus became the ruler. However people say that “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” Hou Yi became tyrannical and pursued immoral life. Once he got the elixir of immortality, his wife, Chang-E swallowed it in order to save the people from the dictator. Thus she became light and flew to and lived on the moon. • Celebration: Also because of the pronunciation of round moon(月圓)is homophonic with family reunion(團圓), people in this day get together with family members, viewi the full moon and have mooncakes for celebration. And thus began the barbecue culture as a activity that people can do while viewing the moon outdoor. • Introduction videos: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=wb. TD 5 v.
