A Brief History of The NDP NDP stands

A Brief History of The NDP • NDP stands for New Democratic Party • Centre left to left wing • Leader is Jagmeet Singh • NDP was founded in 1961 • Has often been the third most popular party in Canada • Social Democratic Political Party • Founding Leader was Tommy Douglas

Their Ideology • The federal NDP is widely portrayed as having voted to distance itself from a description of its politics as "socialist” • The NDP are proud of their political and activist heritage, and their long record of visionary, practical, and successful governments. That heritage and that record have distinguished and inspired their party since the creation of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in 1933 and the founding of the New Democratic Party in 1961.

The Current NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh • Singh announced his candidacy for the New Democratic Party leadership following a leadership review that resulted in a leadership election to replace Tom Mulcair • Despite entering the leadership race as a dark horse candidate who polled as low as 2% in early opinion polls, Singh emerged as the leading candidate in the contest and was elected Leader on October 1, 2017, with a first round vote of 53. 8% in a field of four. • Singh became the first person of a visible minority group to lead a Canadian federal political party on a permanent basis, and the second overall after Bloc Québécois’ former interim leader Vivian Barbot

The Last Candidate • • • Went to BCIT for Broadcast Journalism Went to UBC for Creative arts and humanities Lived in Coquitlam her whole life Worked as a broadcast journalist for News 1130 and CKNW Disappointed with the previous government so she decided to run so she could make a change Went door to door talking to people and trying to get votes One of her main focuses is to make food more accessible to whoever needs it Wants to make sure everyone makes enough money for basic human needs Got 27. 25% of Coquitlam/Port Coquitlam votes

Public Opinion Polls Based on this poll from Toronto, from June 16 th to September 10 th, 2015 the NDP led the federal horse race by a consistently small margin. Shortly after this lead however they declined until November 2015. Since then they have kept their polls quite steady, however the NDP is still considered not much competition for the larger parties such as the liberals and conservatives. Support for the NDP is just over 1 in 10 (12%) and, like the Liberals, hasn’t changed at all since December (Dec 15: 12%).

Cont. • This poll begins from June 16 th, 2015 to January 22 nd, 2018 and was based on 1408 Canadians

Cont. Because of the recent depletion of points for the liberals going from an average polling of 40. 5% has dropped to 39. 5% from the last 3 months, this has resulted in other parties such as the conservatives, NDP, and green party to gain points throughout Canada. The largest rise for the NDP happened in BC and the prairies where they gained 3. 1 points.

Cont. • These quarterly poll averages are based on the results of 12 national and regional public opinion polls conducted between Dec. 2016 and Feb. 2017 by seven different pollsters, interviewing just under 16, 000 Canadian adults using a variety of methodologies, including online panels, interactive voice response and telephone interviews.

Beliefs On: Human Rights • For human’s right, NDP advocate gender equality and equal rights of homosexuality, the members in this party have tried their best to reduce poverty, and protect human rights. Workers' rights include raising the minimum wage to meet the cost of living, advocated the use of proportional representation, unpublished Canadian House of Lords. • New Democrats seek a future that brings together the best of the insights and objectives of Canadians who, within the social democratic and democratic socialist traditions, have worked through farmer, labour, cooperative, feminist, human rights and environmental movements, and with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, to build a more equal and sustainable Canada within a global community dedicated to the same goals.

Beliefs On: Health Care • For Health care, every family have their own family doctor, so that Canadians could keep healthy. NDP will expand the public health services, including dental and prescription medicine insurance. Therefore, you don’t need to spend lots of money in medicine and hospital.

Beliefs On: Immigration • The NDP promises to bring in at least 10, 000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year. This shows that the NDP is diverse, and care about other countries that are need. The NDP also wants to simplify the visitor immigration system, and they want to make immigration easier and carefree by getting rid of applications, and landing fees, and to have a sponsor. They will allow temporary foreign workers to bring any immediate family, this shows us the NDP wants to have more refugees and for them to understand what Canadians feel, allowing them to have families and easier access to Canada is a country of acceptance and with these changes, it will portray Canada to become more diverse and accepting.

Beliefs On: Jobs and Economy • ending corporate bailouts, increasing the minimum wage in federally regulated industries to $15 per hour, making access to employment insurance easier and increasing taxes on the wealthy. • Reduce senior’s retirement age from 67 to 65, and increase • Hike corporate tax rate from 15% to 17% • Lower taxes for small businesses from 11% to 9%

News Story • The NDP party, wants to decriminalize the use of drug use to a certain extent. This doesn’t mean that drugs are going to be legalized, meaning drugs will still be illegal to sell on the streets and to manufacture, you would still need a license. Jagmeet Singh says that Canada should treat drug abuse as a form of seeking healthcare, rather than charging you for having possession of the drugs. The NDP is the first to approach decriminalizing drugs, because we’re wasting billions of dollars on criminalizing drugs, and clearly, it’s not working and overdose rates are increasing. As long as the drugs are small quantities for personal use, and for some medical reasoning. The party is portrayed as different, but rational, because in Portugal they did this and they were successful all their numbers decreased. All the other parties disagree, because they just want marijuana to be decriminalized, because they think that there will be more people abusing it than using it properly. There could be a slight bias, because the author Andrew Woo, reports about drug policies and if she’s with changing drug policies she could’ve made the NDP look better than it should have been.
